If he were crying, he would want the jury to see it in order to elicit sympathy of any sort to keep his case alive. He was similing, and knowingly covered his mouth so they couldn't see it, knowing full well that if he smile were visible to all, then his case would be essentially over.
That was his reaction when the court was shown photos of his dead wife and child. He's laughing - it's not an unknown reaction when seeing something like that. On the battle field soldiers would sometimes burst out laughing at comrades who got shot or blown up infront of them. I'm pretty sure psychiatry has a name for this type of reaction
