I'm a violist first and foremost and played one concert on double bass .... He makes me want to play more! He has so much fun with it and he's so cockey which makes the piece!
I like the unneeded shifts. 'Just shows that by practicing you can have more fun with your music while performing instead of worrying about other things.
I'm a cellist; and even though I play with a transcription of this piece is really fun to play it gives a lot of space to expression and show to the audience you're having fun. :D I love to play saint-saëns' the swan and the elephant.
oh man...i just started playing the bass 2 years ago. i just finished playing capriccio italian, 1812 overture, and themes from symphony 7. (they aren't the original versions, but they are still grade 3 or 4) this guy puts me to shame! haha now i wanna go get the sheet music for this and try to play it! =P
i am practicing this piece for a solo concert, so im lookign at professionals play this and i hav to say, this guy is 1 of the best ive seen ... absolutely!! :D
@DeltaSilver88 I wouldnt describe it as "being goofy". Im pretty sure he is feeling PRECISELY what he is playing. Its the connection to the instrument and the piece that makes his facial expressions so accurate to the mood of the song.
@DeltaSilver88 Couldn't agree more, watching the artist enjoy playing makes the whole experience overall just more enjoyable for the audience as well.
I personally believe this piece would be even better if played on a bass tuba. I saw a performance of this at the Proms this year, and the piano just drowned out the double bass. No danger of that with a bit of brass!
One of the few melodic double bass solos, almost everything else written for the bass is either very percussive or at the extremes of its range. It's pieces like this that remind me why I play bass, the rest of the time I find myself wishing I was a cellist.
I see what you mean, but you have to consider what the actual song is about. In certain pieces going to the extreme ranges does make sense in the context of the song and not only there to show off (f.e.:Bottesini-Elegy) such as here it stays in the low range to make those elephants dance!
Why do bass players feel the need to 'hug' the bass when playing low notes? I am learning to play the bass, and I am having the same problem...I also tend to lean the bass away from me on the 'high' notes...
how many years have you been playing? ive been playing for almost 7 years and i tend to pull the bass away from me when i play E but other then that i dont pull away unless i want to do a big finsh
Basses are actually pretty loud, especially in the lower range. Waay louder than violins, for example.
I think there's not a lot of solo repertoire because of the technical limitations of the instrument and the lack of well-know virtuosos.
Awesome playing, both Mihaela and Stacey. I wish my bass tone was even a bit like Stacey's. It's kind of the complete opposite, unfortunately. Love this video!
yay that was so much fun to watch I love it when musicions really go for it he looked like he was having such a good time and the pianist was smiling through the whole of it to :)
I have to play this for solo ensemble on tthe of course; the double bass
wish me luck
