My lil' dwarf likes me and willingly climbs onto my palm, sometimes even without any food on it! But my syrian always tries to run away from me but thankfully he's not a biter so it was okay... :) Both of them are sweethearts!
I got a hamster last week and I started with petting her softly since day one, then on day 4 I would put a treat on my hand and she would climb on it to eat it. From the on I've been holding her every day and she seems fine with it. Just remember to be patient and that all hammys are different. She never bit me, I guess it's because you have to let them get used to your smell and voice first. Try siging to them the first few days, it'll help them get familiar with you :).
Here is a little advice. Give it a day or two before attempting to handle (I handled my first hamster on the day I got it). Then you have to be firm but not rough. It may be scared and try to run away but just pick it up anyway (don't be scared). Cup your hands around it and then it will get calmer ! :)

@GmodGuy757 okay.....whenever he starts to burrowing in your hand,just put him back in his cage....then after a few minutes, get him back out again. and if he does it again, just repeat. hope this works! plz reply and tell me if it does!
@GmodGuy757 Try putting the hamster in a bowl of food so that its cheeks are filled. Give it something to nibble on while you hold it so that it can't bite you. Make sure you're also wearing NO RINGS. Make sure your hands are also soft. If they feel calluses, they will bite it thinking it's something for them to nibble on.

@789silla It will hurt for about like 30 ms wich isnt long it will just bleed then the pain is gone Right after you get bit Ive been bitten before I know what its like XD if you dont feel safe with him you have to treat him everyonce in a while and he will be liek " Ooo this person is giving me food I should be good to get more of these treats" And he will get used to you and he will become tame.
@789silla Hold the treat between your index(pointing) finger and your thumb as if you are pinching it, that should work. And dont be afraid of a small hamster bite, they usually feel like a small nibble, you'll be fine! :D
@erietigers91 Start off by placing your hand in the cage WITHOUT attempting to pick her up or doing anything to her, let her sniff your hands, let her get used to you, try hand feeding her! Hope this helps!

i got my hamster yesterday and tamed him today, i let him out his cage into his playpen and then into his ball and when i took him out of his ball it was onto my hand but i let him walk onto it by himself and hes perfectly ok with being held, oh i forgot to mention before this i gave his some carrot and some hamster loops.

woooooo i let her get used to me for a week and even when she was scared i just got her and held her for a bit like a min and put her bk and kept doing tht it works it also helps if you give them their fave treat while theyre in your hands btw im gunna do a vid too if yall wanna see it on how to hold a sryan :D
what i did was before i held Cupcake(my dwarf)I put some sanitizer on.Then i would rub my hands on my pants.I would then take out Cupcake with something like a tube,and place her on my lap. I would let her run around and when she tried 2 walk off,I would put my hand there.Then i held her in my hands and ever since,she has been fine.This works really well in a play pen in case the hamster jumps or something.Check out my channel for an awesome homemade playpen.I will upload vids all the time
when u go to pick him up let him come to u instead of picking him up also never put your hands into his cage coz thats like his private space then he shouldn't bite
i have a robo hamster too its a boy and its name is blue but it keeps on running away sence robo hamsters are hella fast but what worked for me is i rubbed the flooring on my hands and let him smell me then he got use to me and got on my hand

Hey, you seem to know a lot about taming hamsters. We just got a young black bear (syrian). Over the past week he grew more comfortable and was eating from our hands although he nipped a few times. Last night, I made a playpen area on the carpet, big enough for me to be in too. My hope was too slowly pet and interact with him (and not force the issue), but he got super scared and I had a hard time getting him back in the cage. How can I get him to and from a playpen without scaring him?

no. you dont let the hamster smell the hand you were holding the treats in. That only intises it to bite you. Not being mean just letting you know so other people don't think that is ok to do.
If your scared your hamster will bite just wear gloves. That's what i did, and occasionally take the gloves off. Now my hamster never bites at all xxx
mmthat's not the right way of taming hamsters. If the hamster is territorial,he will bite you..^^
In roder to tame an hamster you just have to let him walk in a room,giving him food and leaving him free of exploring your body...doing that 20 minutes every day the hamster will nt be scared by you...And remember that an hamster walkning in a room doesn't bite.
Thank you so much. ^.^ I`m quite use to squirrels (that I raise and release after hurricanes) and it baffled me when I made this huge cage for two dwarfs and after letting them get use to it, giving them the occasional treats, and moving from gloves to hands one bit me for simply having my hand inside the cage. They never bit me when on my shoulder while I was on the computer or sketching with them on the bed.

also for some really strange reason (i didn't train it to do this!!) when she's on my hand she runs up my arm, onto my shoulders and underneath my hair......she stays there for hours and even climbs to the top of my head....
I actually just got a robo today. It is the first hampster I've ever owned. He seems to be adjusting to his cage and I've managed to put him in the plastic ball and he actually ran around in it for a little while. also you should NEVER feed your hamster lettuce. lettuce causes them to get a disease called wet tail. you will know if they have wet tail if you see them less active, gooey ozzy suff, blood, or diahrria on their bottom. allthough it can be treated. GREAT VIDEO! :)

i wouldnt reccomend with really small children. NOT YOU but smaller kids like at age 5 they can easily squish them or hurt them, for example, My friends cousin when he was 5 he put the hamster in a sock and swung it around of course it died. :(

wash your hand before touching him. be gentle. dun chase it everywhere... try to look at it like u are playing with a kid. do not be afraid to get bitten. a small bite won't kill you unless if it carries diseases. keep its cage clean and talk to him... keep having interaction with it. let him get to know you. ^_^ call his name often, so that he knows his name.
That was amazing! After it went on your hand and you lowered it, the hamster didn't want to get off or go back down, it wanted to stay on your hand by ignoring the floor and climbing up your wrist! That is really sweet ^^

How come all of these videos make you put the hamster in your hand!! It still bites every time I try holding it!!! Is their an other way without having to use your hands for a while? Please help!
P.S. I have a russian dwarf. He only bites me, whenever somebody else holds him he won't bite.

Hey, you seem to know a lot about taming hamsters. We just got a young black bear (syrian). Over the past week he grew more comfortable and was eating from our hands although he nipped a few times. Last night, I made a playpen area on the carpet, big enough for me to be in too. My hope was too slowly pet and interact with him (and not force the issue), but he got super scared and I had a hard time getting him back in the cage. How can I get him to and from a playpen without scaring him?

i have a hamster called Tiko.
he's a russian dwarf hamster and i have an other hamster (a syrian) in the same cage. is that alright because everytime he walks around and see the other hamster she screams as hell! i don't know what to do :( and every time i try him to sniffle my hand he bites me but i can still stroke him idk wye :P please help me :)

no. you dont let the hamster smell the hand you were holding the treats in. That only intises it to bite you. Not being mean just letting you know so other people don't think that is ok to do.

If your scared your hamster will bite just wear gloves. That's what i did, and occasionally take the gloves off. Now my hamster never bites at all xxx

mmthat's not the right way of taming hamsters. If the hamster is territorial,he will bite you..^^
In roder to tame an hamster you just have to let him walk in a room,giving him food and leaving him free of exploring your body...doing that 20 minutes every day the hamster will nt be scared by you...And remember that an hamster walkning in a room doesn't bite.

Thank you so much. ^.^ I`m quite use to squirrels (that I raise and release after hurricanes) and it baffled me when I made this huge cage for two dwarfs and after letting them get use to it, giving them the occasional treats, and moving from gloves to hands one bit me for simply having my hand inside the cage. They never bit me when on my shoulder while I was on the computer or sketching with them on the bed.

I actually just got a robo today. It is the first hampster I've ever owned. He seems to be adjusting to his cage and I've managed to put him in the plastic ball and he actually ran around in it for a little while. I had my husband do it because I was nervous but I want to tame him. I'm kinda scared though. I don't have treats yet..well I bought cabbage, could I use that? Help!

also you should NEVER feed your hamster lettuce. lettuce causes them to get a disease called wet tail. you will know if they have wet tail if you see them less active, gooey ozzy suff, blood, or diahrria on their bottom. allthough it can be treated. GREAT VIDEO! :)

that's really bad, it can cause brain damage or broken ingrown teeth if they bite the bars. BUY IT CHEW TOYS

hi, i have a hamster bout 2 years old and he (gus) isn't very social at all, he will bite you once you put your hand near him, and im scared to do this again cuz i already had a hamster die of stress oonce, and im scared the same could happen to this hamster? do you have any techniques to tame him or is it to late since he is alerady 2?

hey! that seems like a RLLY good video, but my dwarf hamster is already 1 yr old, and she STILL bites me like crazy!!! when she was younger she didn't, but she suddenly got into this biting phase. it started a couple months ago, but i don't know what 2 do... do u hav ny tips?

let it bite you, but don't freak out. leave your hand in the cage so she knows that she isn't boss. and then do the steps this video tells you.

ive tried to pick up my hamster and shes brand new, but i think ive pushed it her too much and she leaped out of my hands and bit me and peed on me.
it just all went wrong.
If i tried again a week or two later, do you think she will start to get used to me?

i wouldnt reccomend with really small children. NOT YOU but smaller kids like at age 5 they can easily squish them or hurt them, for example, My friends cousin when he was 5 he put the hamster in a sock and swung it around of course it died. :(

the only problem is my hamster doesn't ever want the treats. I've tried yogurt drop or fresh carrots, strawberry, banana chips. nothing. but I can pick him up and handle him. He licks me. sometimes he is too hyper.

Hey, i've just got a russian dwarf hamster, I really wanna tame him so i can pet him a bit. I've had him three days so i'm just leaving him to get used to his surroundings, occasionally when he wakes up i put my hand in the cage to let him sniff it to see i'm not going to hurt him.
Also, could you let me know how long it usually takes to tame them, he doesn't seem aggressive and hasn't bitten me. What sort of things should i him as a treat, is there anything they go mad for?

My 2 robo never bit me even though I handled them too much on their first day even without treats. They're the cutest things ever. Question- My hamster is about 10cm when he is slightly stretched,(when he walks) How old is he? the pet store said they didn't know their age but now I think that they are not telling me because they're old.

wash your hand before touching him. be gentle. dun chase it everywhere... try to look at it like u are playing with a kid. do not be afraid to get bitten. a small bite won't kill you unless if it carries diseases. keep its cage clean and talk to him... keep having interaction with it. let him get to know you. ^_^ call his name often, so that he knows his name.

That was amazing! After it went on your hand and you lowered it, the hamster didn't want to get off or go back down, it wanted to stay on your hand by ignoring the floor and climbing up your wrist! That is really sweet ^^
