what i do for cans is i tape the can to the paper before rolling then i start rolling it. and then tape it again. to make sure the paper remains tight.

My mom taught me to wrap presents exactly that way but except at the last steps where you fold the side ends over to tape it down, I fold it in on itself so that it doesn't go to the back of the box.

I love the pain in the ass part. The biggest one for me was probably accessories that I couldn't find a container for.
