This story is good because it is partly believable. Researchers for a story or a screenplay, like undercover cops, have to get close to their sources and they sometimes cross the line from fiction into non-fiction. The Godfather was so good because it was about actual people in the Mafia and some of the stuff really happened. Above the Law has this reality aspect as well.

Most miss this movie's point.Some claim dennehy's character is to slow to catch on.But he clearly wasn't,from dennehy's perspective it was personal,so he was willing to go as far as he could to nail the robber baron.He's writing a book that will tell ALL,which is why i think he lets woods take him as far as he can.Its great to see woods and dennehy play off each other.How they both taunt each other.

Really great movie. Some people hate it because it had too little action scenes. BUT it wasn't Action movie. It was Drama/Thriller and for this kind of movies it was excellent. James Woods was brilliant here. The same with Brian Dennehy and Victoria Tennant.

I highely recommend this really underrated film

ebert's review is kind of short sighted.Did it ever occur to him that dennehy was not as straight laced charachter?Sure he's a dedicated cop,but something tells me he liked the ride woods was giving him.Remember when woods says,''we're alot alike,you and i''?It looked like he was willing to go as far as he could,to get the story.

I had a chance to meet James Woods on the set of "Citizen Cohn" in March of 1992. I got to tell him how good I thought "Best Seller" was and how excellent his interpretation of Cleve was. This is easily one of the most underrated movie of the '80s.

@cake5000 It certainly is underrated, I can't find it anywhere, not even torrentz. Can you tell me how I can find it? Woods does so well. Don't want to miss it. Dying DVD stores have only recent bestsellers nowdays. Is this the end of good old movies? I would pay if it was available, but I will download no problem if you can tell me where to go.

But Dennehy and Woods are great in this film.

The film has a great story also.
