@oJKBo despite the fact that diem is a catholic fanatic, there was more religious freedom in south vietnam. in a country heavily influenced by conservative values of confucianism such as vietnam, the word religion takes on a very different meaning. while the self-immolation of thich quang duc for example did indicate an unjustifiable level of religious persecution in the south, you can hardly use it to say that north vietnam was more tolerant of it.

The Southern States would have been recognized by the United States if their cause were just--it was not, they seceded in order to preserve the institution of slavery, read their declarations of secession.
