  • I wish EVERYONE who thinks they know music to watch this video. This gave me chills to see so much talent be so underrated and not have the upmost appreciation of today's industry. But then again, being judged by an industry who is blind to SOUL music is already a disadvantage. I'm glad she measures her success on the influence she has on INDIVIDUALS...'cause she definately brought enlightenment and a refreshing feeling to my SOUL! I LOVE LALAH HATHAWAY!....One of the best artists of all time!

  • Im grateful that she puts into perspective the difference between authentic jazz and instrumental pop. She is absolutely correct. Just because its instrumental music doesn't make it jazz music. Jazz has a much wider range of expression that its players take full advantage of.

  • @xlmusic1 I highly encourage you to Google a blog that trumpeter Nicholas Payton just wrote on this very same issue. His contention is that "jazz" died in 1959 when people starting desiring the sounds of dead people more than a living, evolving music. He can bit a bit profane, but he's also funny and honest.

  • @stefrenee he can BE a bit profane...stupid iOS spell check! :)

  • OMG...YOU ARE IT!!!!!! If people don't get IT...then they don't know music...and I'm not just saying that because of your dad, but because you are a gifted artist!!!! IT girl!!!! Triple platinum in my book.

  • truly love this young lady's voice....haven't had a chance to see her live yet...the one thing i hate about living overseas. how about venturing to italy Ms. Hathaway???

  • Lovin' it! Lalah seems like she's real cool and down-to-earth, level-headed and wise. I've been diggin' hear ever since she came out. Sista is droppin' some science bigtime! Much success to Lalah!

  • I love this Sister

  • I really like how she holds herself in this discussion and i love all her viewpoints. I wonder how she'd react to usher grinding on some young teen up on stage :P

  • So love Her!

  • Lalah is this cool in real life... I know her personally...

  • @softorsteeltip She SURE is!! And folks, Lalah is thrilled to know that so many of you have stopped by to view this interview. I gave her an update on the video's stats just this past weekend. Keep an eye out for news on her next album, which will be out in just a few more weeks!

  • Gone Head! She is VERY SMART awe. WOW I'm proud to be a FAN. See Smart Talented Out Spoken & BEAUTIFUL inside & out. What she is saying is very deep and the real music thing I feel that. From the 4th grade until the 11th grade I played 4 instrument's. I was in the Marching Band as well. So I understand what she means about our kids. I LOVE MUSIC all kinds music as gotten me through a lot. We need to be respecting it. Thanx for uploading this interview.

  • I love u Lalah are u married??

  • Great video, Lalah is a true artist who is definately continuing the legacy of what our music has always represented. Art, story telling, love in words, messages of truth struggle and hope. I'm so glad she hasn't sold out her integrity to the "big machine" because that's the only hope we have for keeping what we create, real.

  • BEAUTIFUL TALKING VOICE

  • I do respect what Lalah Hathaway is interpreting to educate, in reference to "Jazz music", but still she MUST also admit the term JAZZ was defined by the non-black business folk, who marketed it (managers, record labels etc.) rather than the artists themselves. When in actuality JAZZ is just another offspring child of "slave plantation blues/gospel". SOUL / R&B was pressed upon the backs of "Negro-African-American" artists of yesterday. "GANSTA RAP" was also conspired by the majors.

  • the sad truthabout quality music is that the dollar dictates who or what has "IT",. Teenagers with no jobs lol spend the most money, fact! Like with all things good and bad it starts in the home. Lalah is in the company of Anita baker, Chaka, Natalie Cole, Gladis easy!

  • @1105scoot absolutely she is!!!

  • I love you for your honesty, I love you for your earthly goodness, I love you for being YOU! Lalah, you EMBODY the word BEAUTIFUL, in every since of the word. You can't help but to have IT. Because GOD put IT in YOU.You will be Blessed forever, as long as you continue to be a blessing to others. Keep on keeping IT real my sista!

I Love you! Calvin L Brown PEACE (I would love to meet you one day)

  • OMG! I love her. Preach sister, preach. That is definately Donny Hathaways' daughter. Brilliance breeds brilliance.

  • Well spoken...a true artist with sense breaking it down for us...thank you...

  • Proud that she is an American Treasure !

  • Lalah you are the world's best kept secret! That voice..that voice...that voice is soo beautiful!

  • You go mama. Tell the truth about it all. As a singer myself and performig I can releate to what you are saying. Your dad was the most influential singers of all time and you my dear are just as influential. Its hard to be recognized in the world of music today with the crap and garbage that is being exposed. Naked, no talent, and vulgar is what it takes to make it. What a shame.

  • Thank God for Lalah Hathaway.

  • wow...EDUCATION is NOT an option...Lalah thank you thank you and thank you! You cannot hurt yourself if you are educating yourself---LOVE IT!!!!

  • Lalah you are so very precious.

  • 'i thought the IT was me'...she's funny too...and RIGHT!

  • 4:17-4:21...Classic line

"My education does not get in the way of my "feel."

That reminds of something I heard this one pastor say to young people as he was encouraging them to get an education. He said, "Get your learning, but don't lose your burning."

As far as African American music goes it's so important that people understand that the natural "feel' and the learned skill must compliment each other. One should not negate the other.

  • Lalah is a intellectual who definitely knows music and I hope that she will go as far as life will allow her. She is the female version of Donny and you can tell she is the one to carry it on. I hope that she will garnish all and pick up where her dad left off. Please keep up the good work!! She is not only beautiful and smart, but a REAL MUSICIAN!!!!!

  • she is such a gift

  • LOVE LAYLA HATHAWAY!!!!!!!!

  • I've been waiting to kiss her since 1989, I love her way more!

  • ive been wanting to kiss this woman for the last 12 years....I luv her

  • she has the sexiest lips... and even though you hear a lot of her father in her voice she's still her own artist...

  • Finally another out spoken intellectual who hasn't sold out and turned against the vast and mostly denied and ignored African historical contribuitons that far exceed just being entertainers. We have all been hoodwinked. Many of us want to go along to get along no matter how harmful to the planet.

  • Maybe you could say what isn't soul music, - that probably be more easier to do!

  • This sista is intelligent, beautiful, and honest. She embodys what a true black woman is.

  • tlofee, WORD!!!!!! Real talk right here.

  • true statement!!!!!!!!!!

  • Real talk.

Her answers are thoughtful and captivate the human heart. She could teach these "pop" singers how to say more than "it's crazy!".

  • 7:48 Why arent any of our kids trying to play instruments and be in bands. Why are they with drum machines and trying to figure out how to get shot at nine times to make a record?" This is a good got damn question!

  • @ESSENCEOFEACHTHING for the same reason that we pay 30 to 40 thousand for a decent car, 300 to 400 thousand for homes and who knows- which week for gas. consumers don't stand for anything- we fall for everything.

  • A true super star.HER best RECORDS, are BABY DONT CRY(1990) and her smash hit LET ME LOVE YOU(1994).HER new hit LET GO (2008) gets the party ROCKING

  • GOD bless you, Lalah, bring that TRUTH!

  • I love LALAH.....An artist to be reckoned with.....She is THE TRUTH!

  • true!!!!!!!

  • I am glad someone shares my believes and puts it out there :-) Go Girl !!

Now all we need to do is make her the best unkept secret in the world !!

  • Real Aspiring artist listen to this, nobody determines weather you are successful but you!!

If you show someone your skills on this site and someone makes a bad comment about you, it doesn't effect you unless you belive it, belive in yourself that's what matters!!

  • I still love her after all this time

  • Whoa!!! This interview is amazing. I luv her music. This perspective is a good way 2 look @ life in general.

  • Well said Lalah!!! Especially the Mint Condition comment!!! They are the TRUTH!!!

  • Way to comment on "Smooth Jazz". I couldn't agree with her more.

  • I hope she's performing at the 2009 Inauguration!!! Somebody book her - she can fill in for the late, GREAT Odetta!!! God rest her soul.

  • I'm just elated about finding this...I Love LALAH!!!!!! Her voice is...man, i can't even get all deep and philosopical!

  • This lady is a mellow intelligent, articulate Chi town artist in the purest form. LALAH rocks! Kick azz chic. She is my friend on myspace:-)

  • LOL @ 28 videos on BET comment. I love her!

  • I would love to just meet her one day. I'm a man's man but I think I would tear up.

  • me too!! i would probably be all tongue tied and what not !!! lol

  • hER VIBE IS FAB!!!!

  • Quite simply one of the most honest and insightful discussion of music and culture I have ever heard. Great artist who deserves every accolade that comes her way.

  • Lalah Hathaway's interview is articulate, perceptive, and deeply honest. She was very candid, in her definition of jazz music. This is more than a sound bite. You can see her love for soul music. Her conversation is rare on so many levels. She recognizes that she is following her father's legacy (Donny Hathaway) and other great soul artist. She discusses the apathy in the music industry for soul music. There are only a few in the pursuit, to master their art and craft. This is underground music.

  • Lalah I agree, you do have the "IT" FACTOR ;-)

  • I now know why I'm so afraid about the future of black music! WE MUST support these artist people. Where are the next generations of Stevies, Curtis's, EWF's, Arethas, Natalies' going to come from if WE don't support them? I love you Laila.

  • Wow.. She looks just like her father.. the late Donny Hathaway. He would be proud of her.

  • AMEN LAH!!! My babies KNOW who ALLLLLLL of those artists are, esp you! and I am proud that my kids can name you by voice! You rock mama!

  • Lalah Hathaway is the living TRUTH! I can't say enough great things about her as an artist. This girl TRULY has "IT." She is SO real and down to earth. What a great interview! Thanks for sharing "IT!"

  • I hate to say it but for years I have felt the same way about this theory of jazz. just like neo soul and everyone used the lead of toni tony tone to represent it and he was against it. It needs its own catagory.

  • I love Lalah with all my heart. Not only is she a good vocalist, she's VERY sexy! I am her number one fan. Donny is also my idol. Much love to Lalah, Eulaulah, Kenya & Donny

  • I think that posting this interview

is the greatest thing you could have done

    for this INCREDIBLE ARTIST.

I know Cats say "Just let the music speak for itself", but as in all forms of art, understanding the ARTIST a little better serves to help you better understand and appreciate the ART.

  • wow, what an intelligent and perceptive woman is Lalah, I've been a fan for some years now and to hear her views on the music industry is so refreshing, real and super articulate. I wish this sort of interview was on tv instead of the rubbish they put out supposedly reflecting our tastes... this kind of woman represents a "quiet revolution" back to quality instead of quantity.. and like she says, who needs to go platinum when you can sing a song like Lalah.

  • Give me Lalah, Donnie and Ledisi any day. Soul music is IT!

  • great taste........

  • Outstanding commentary from a soul sister who knows.

  • Please leave this interview up for as long as possible, its inspirational.

  • Lalah is IT!

  • Lalah's insight on the music industry and black culture is with a great deal of depth and honesty. An artist with her talent should have many million sellers. I love her music. She is truly amazing. We can only pray that real music will have a place in the industry again soon. God Bless You, Lalah. Keep doing your thang, girl.

  • thanks for the in-sight!

  • Lalah is so fine to me.

  • Lalah is deep. But its funny hearing someone try to give an 'intellectual' explanation of an organic artform such as Soul music.

  • Lalah is LUMINOUS. And smart and talented and kind and witty.

  • Kudos!

  • stellar, even behind the scenes! people need to hear this interview.

  • I LOVE THIS WOMAN!!
