widen the stance, pull the left foot outside. When slashing, pull the katana with left hand only, while use the right hand to control the movement. Finish with the your arms in front-left position from your body, the blade should never get behind you. It's not that those things really that mattered, but you're gonna look cooler :D

hold your katana like a bird, not to hard and not to lose.

when u start your swing start to pinch your pinky and ring finger, so the tip of ur katana starts to move the way you need to and try to let the blade flow behind it.

your upperhand steers the way the blade is going ur lower hand on the handle pulls/pushes the blade where has to go.

remember the only real part that is used for cutting is the top 4 inch max !

This blade was not a Slice-o-Matic

It's power in the hand of practiced user, was to kill by action of the last half of the sword, in a strike/slicing movement.

You do not use this blade hacking off the first half of the blade.

Look up some basic katana techniques. Stance, grip and so forth.

You are supposed to stop the blade after hitting your target. DO NOT swing it like a baseball.

Props for trying a horizontal cut, as it is the most difficult cutting technique.

@stumpodeath Focus more on slicing with the blade, pulling it back so the edge drags into the target, over swingin it really hard and chopping, not slicing. Youll find it easier to cut the target and wont have such a far follow through. Your sword should never be behind you man.
