anybody knows how these "gospel cats" muffle the bass drum?

big pillow insinde or just a matter of tunning..? coze it doesnt matter how tight or loose i crank my bass drum head the vibrations of it dont let me play a clear double stroke.. like 2 16ths in a row!

how would you say thomas pridgen muffles his bass drum? when he is playing with the mars volta he used to play an acrylic DW kit and there was no pillow.. also i couldnt see any muffling in the head..

his drums don't get lost in the mix and sound just right. plenty of drummers try to muffle their drums so they sound like studio recorded drums when you're sitting on top of them, but if they were to mic them up and play live or record them, they would probably sound very thuddy.

drums are not made resonant for no reason. resonance projects through music and ultimately make the drums sound full with the mix. basically, the music usually covers up all tones that some may find unappealing and people can only hear the intial contact. thats why i like cymbals with a long decay, a snare with a little ring, and toms that resonate with good tone.

It's not all about the tuning. These our powerful hard hitters. one cool way to practice that is to really tighten your pedal, and really loosen your head so that there is hardly and rebound. But they do tune a certain way. The EMAD is a good head for that sound.

There this thing with drummers that come from church: the great ability to ba able to pick up a pocket with their ear and creat on the fly. Early jazz drummers took alot of their ques for Church drummers because they play out of pure inspiration, and not so much sheet music, though learning traditionally has its advantages and greatly enhances a drummer like Spank the best of both worlds. You can't find that in any other circle of drummers.
