That's my idea of what the plot is, for anyone who hasn't seen it. It is a truly amazing movie and Meryl Streep is superb.

One of my favorite movies. Meryl plays woman involved in French resistance in WW2. Sam Neill is British parachute jumper she helps. Brief poignant love affair heightened by fear, war. The rest of her life never comes close to what she felt then. She uses Sting to try to father a child (because he reminds her of Sam Neill). Marries Charles Dance but hates him. End of movie shows her flashback in a sunny field as war has ended full of hope for more days like these. There will be plenty.

I didn't know what to make of this film when it first came out; Susan Trehearne is such a troubled and troubling character. In the intervening 20 years I have come to admire, to pity, and sometimes to envy her. Streep is radiant in the part; I don't think anybody has ever filmed her to such evocative advantage as Fred Schepisi did in this film. Thank you for posting the many manifestations of her beauty.
