I do believe Lynch had some type of message of theme in mind when he started. But this was filmed over the course of several years and badly out of order, so whatever that idea was underwent heavy changes over and over. i think henry was captured by aliens. in the first scene, the camera shows a black planet somewhere in the distant space. after that, a man on the planet pulls a lever. then, something is dropped to earth in a hole. the next scene is henry looking upward to the sky. also, the child that mary x gives birth has alien features. there's also a religious theme to it. if i can recall, i think they ask henry if him and mary x were sexually involved. the answer is no. so, mary x gives a virgin birth.

I dont mind admitting it's too much for me, horror and the macabre I can certainly enjoy to an extent, but yes, this is too jarred and surreal, and it leaves me feeling uneasy at best. brilliant director in terms of contrast and conveying emotion. although one has to wonder wether you're watching the brilliant vision of a genius or the derranged sickness of a madman. you never really know and I think that adds to his works appeal.

From what I heard, that scene and a few others were cut from the film by lynch immediateley after it's first screening. Suposedly all the scenes he cut were destroyed, but on the DVD I have, the main menu plays a loop of the scene with the cat. It's only a few seconds long.
