    A "Royal Straight" is no different to a normal straight just that it beats lower ranked straights. The same is true of the "Royal Flush".

  • @kmcook01 But to use your same analogy if I get an Ace high straight (not flush) and I call it a "Royal Straight" it doesn't make it a distinct hand ranking just because I give it a name.

    Of course I call it a royal flush, just as other hands can have nicknames (dead man's hand etc.). It doesn't mean according to the mathematical nature on which hand rankings are based that it is DISTINCT.

    It has a colloquial name, but's it's not a separate rank.

For the simple reason that a royal flush is a set hand 10,J,Q,K,A suited. There is no other way to make a royal. A straight flush however can be 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,J,Q,K suited.

  • What are you talking about? There are way more then 4 ways to get a straight flush. You can get A 2 3 4 5 clubs or 3 4 5 6 7 clubs or 5 6 7 8 9 spades 2 3 4 5 6 hearts 7 8 9 10 J diamonds 9 10 J Q K spades. As for royal flush there are ONLY 4 ways to get it... so no the math does NOT add up...

  • You're right, but confused in the first sentence. A royal flush IS a straight flush. We just give it it's own name cause we like the look of it. If you count an Ace high straight flush (aka royal), which you can make 4 ways (Sp He Di Cl) as a distinct hand type, then you also count a King high straight flush as it's own type of hand (4 ways to make it). Same goes for Queen high, jack high etc. But thats not how it's done.

And yes I guess you can make a K high a distinct hand if you wanted, but we don't, that's not within the rules, so therefore has nothing to do with this.

  • It IS "just" an ace high straight flush, the only reason it has a different name is because of popular culture and because it's an identifiable piece of poker lore. For the argument you are making you can't say there are 36 straight flushes because you're then saying an ace high one is separate, which means you're counting EACH one separately. You can't have youre cake and eat it too, either each rank of SF is distinct and makeable in 4 ways, or they are ALL SF's - which is how it is.

  • Hector is right. As far as official poker hands go, there is only straight flush, full house, quads, straight, 3oaK, two pair, and high card. The royal flush gets its distinction for being the highest rank straight flush and therefore the highest ranking hand in poker, but it is not truly a separate category from a straight flush just like aces up isn't a separate hand category from two pair even though it is the best kind of two pair.

  • The only reason the probabilty is lower is because you're not including it in your definition of a straight flush. You could say a king high straight flush is a distinct hand, and in that case the chances would be the same as a royal flush. If you type in 'royal flush' on wikipedia it redirects you to 'straight flush' and says 'An ace-high straight flush is known as a royal flush'. Its like a nickname not really an official type of hand.

  • Sorry but you are incorrect. The straight flush is the best hand in poker, the royal flush is just the top ranking straight flush, but it is not technically a different hand ranking. Four aces is no different to any other four of a kind, it's just the best one you can get. You might want to study the game a little more if you're going to try and act like you know about it.

    The hand ranks are decided base on mathematical difficulty of getting each type of hand. It's mathematically harder to get trips than two pair etc.

    It's mathematically just as easy to get a royal flush as it is to get a 9-high straight flush.

    BUT your chance of getting a RF are exactly same as getting any other particular Straight flush -there is only 1 way to make a RF diamonds or a J-High SF diamonds.

    Thats how you measure hand rankings, otherwise 3 Aces would be seperate to all other 3-kind hands too

You don't call a king high straight flush or a queen high straight flush anything different - and even if you did they're both still just straight flushes. There's no hand "Royal Straight".
