Dale & James started playing some of the cocktail lounges and bars in the area, and even had a couple of stints on the Louisiana Hayride. Later, with the help of Stan Lewis, Dale recorded SuzieQ, which provided the springboard for his lifetime success as a performer, and Burton, for his part, went on to play with the likes of Ricky Nelson, Elvis, Roy Orbison, and many others in an equally outstanding career.
Sorry to hear the passing of Delmar, as I knew him. Burton is back in Shreveport.
Dale and I attended a business college, behind Stan's Record Shop in downtown Shreveport, La. under the G.I. Bill in 1956, before he launched his career as an R&R performer. Sometimes we would go to his house and listen to his extensive collection of blues, R&B, and rock-a-billy records for hours. Once, when we were across the river in Bossier City, he introduced me to a 17-yr. old kid by the name of James Burton, who was an aspiring guitarist.
Excellent post, always exciting to trace a well loved song back to the source.
For me however, the Apocalypse Now version of Susie Q by Flash Cadillac is unbeatable although I have to admit the film has enhanced the experience significantly .The fade out with the heavy guitar distortion is a brilliant match for the movie insanity. Check it out
I wish that WCBS-FM 101.1 in New York City, New York, USA would play this song again like they used to. My name is Fred Tenzer, I was born in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA, I live in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA, and my email address is rocket88_doowop@yahoo.com
@JeffN727 Oh, I went through my library on Saturday & disputed only everything that was blocked worldwide (not many - maybe 30 at most out of over 860+ videos). I've got no problems with copyright claims, ads placed on my videos because of said claims or even partial (selected countries) blockage, but this worldwide blockage stuff, especially after months of being ok initially, is, IMO, nothing but arbitrary, fling-at-the-dartboard stuff.
@SwingMan1937 Here's our version that we recorded about 1964. I played the 57 green Strat in the picture and inserted some Freddie King licks. We played this from the time it was first a hit and still do some. Our keyboard player worked with Dale much later on several projects. Love those James Burton licks!
That record is looking nearly mint! How glorious! Thanks for posting. This was just a so fabulous this morning with my tea! (Happy Birthday, once again, Mark!)
@sideshowtink Oh man Tink, this baby is a STRONG M- ! Outside of a few minor handling marks (sleeve marks), this beauty could easily pass for old store stock - cleanest copy I've ever seen & probably will see. ;)
I have this song on a CD that I've god as christmas gift at the age of 9 or 10. Wonderful clean copy! :D Maybe I'll upload some new videos this autumn. :) /A
@SwingMan1937 Yes, I'm planning to do some old time jazz uploads, maybe today, but I cannot promise that. Hope you're doing fine in the states! /Falkis
I remember hearing your post of this not too long ago - did they block it worldwide, or just in certain countries?
Yeah, I found out from another user that a slew of Dizzy Gillespie 78's I'd posted & were initially fine (views into 3 figures) were all now blocked worldwide - I disputed every single one that was blocked worldwide (there were a few with plain "3rd party" claims & partial blockages that I didn't want to mess with) and, luckily, they're all fine now.
@Westtoledoguy Man, that's just wrong - fellow YouTube user & a guy who has about the most comphrehensive 78rpm doo-wop/50's collection I've ever seen in "CrisVangel" has his copy of this posted (since January, 2009) & it and its 32,000+ views are still up!
I guess I'll have to wait & see if any action is taken against me - normally if its blocked initially, I don't mess with it. This one was blocked immediately, but, since I saw yours & Cris' up, I went ahead. Those arbitrary f-ers - ARGH!
@SwingMan1937 I hope it works out for you.. I don't mess with them and just from what you said I'd bet they will take down my vid in time.. some of my vids that were up for ages get 'blocked', I guess they just squeeked through at the time I posted them.. anyway it was great to hear your clean copy and it did sound better than my video, your cartridge is obviously better than the 89t I played it from my Califone. Great vid!
WOW! I NEVER KNEW!!! THIS TOTALLY SMOKES CCR (Respectfully)

I just heard this original on the radio recently! I think it was on "American Routes" on Public Radio. Great show if you haven't heard it.
Be careful with the dispute process though. Don't do too many at once.

Awesome! Where'd u get it? (ebay?) just saw a copy for sale recently...
and ..ehem.. how much did it cost? just wondering! of course excellent in my book!
CrisVangel 1 year ago
@CrisVangel Well, I snagged my copy off of ebay.....in 2002. ;)
At $40 + change, it's the most expensive single record in my stash.
SwingMan1937 1 year ago
@SwingMan1937 You did VERY well, especially for 2002 (when the economy wasn't in the state it's currently in..).

And, the pickup/stylus ran me more than twice what the table did, but I'll swear by it. ;)
