Yes...this is probably my favorite song from Wyatt. I get absolutely lost in the album version. And lyrically...well...it pretty much sums it all up, donnit? God bless ya, Robert.
This of course is from the totally wonderful TV Documentary on Robert Wyatt, "Free Will and Testament". And this is my favourite song from it. I agree with whoever said it is a masterpiece. To hell with a Brit Award ... I think what we need in this country is a real Peoples' Award ... and the name of that award could be ... A National Treasure, because that is exactly what he is. Thanks so much for posting this. By the way, the drummer is Liam Genockey, who also plays for Steeleye Span.
@greentomatoef I wouldn´t marry anyone, but jumping out of a building in an LSD trip and then writing songs like this justifies someone´s existance from an utilitarian pov. I also like peanuts.
Thanks for posting this, I never tire of watching it. Now listen to the 8-minute studio version (track 17 on Mid Eighties and the wallow in the acoustic piano fade-out.
Try his solo albums "Rock Bottom", "Old Rottenhat", "Shleep" and the "Volume Two" album by his band Soft Machine. After this, I'm sure you'll buy everything he made. Let me know!
I get so depressed every time I think of how bad it must feel to be Wyatt. A great drummer in the middle of his career getting paralyzed from the waste down...
@himtroy oh, I don't know. He doesn't seem to mind, so I don't suppose we should either. And it actually took him into far more and many musical areas than if he'd stayed being a very drunk, unhappy jazz drummer - he's said as much himself.
I have this album, but have never seen Robert Wyatt perform. I like this song,...what a treat to see it played!! I love this aspect of You Tube!!!! It is a great time to be alive. Instant knowledge,..Instant gratification. Like a dream come true. Matching Mole and Soft Machine rule,...Robert Wyatt,...a distinctive artist.
It's so easy to decide on a name it's a name caller's game It's so easy to look down from above Helicopter vision Get the picture when you're outside the frame Retrospective my eye Call it art and you can say what you like it's a name caller's game Your perspective describes where I stand Out of line, out of mind Calling myopia 'focus', of course, makes it easier still Gharbzadegi means nothing to me Westernitis to you
"Occidentosis (Gharbzadegi) is Jalal Ali Ahmad's tryst with the infinite world of ideas, for which the scene is set in twentieth-century Iran and the background is provided by the vast panorama of the East faced with the onslaughts of the Western civilization."

Great song from a great album. Now wake up and support Israel you Maoist idiot!!
robert Wyatt has blown my mind since my music teacher turned me on to him when i was 16. He is still making music and i am still loving what i am hearing.
One of THE greats of British music, just hope one day he will be recognized for his outstanding contribution to British popular music, the man in my eyes & ears is "our" modern day John Coltrane such is my regard for his musical offerings.
By
it's all UK jazz musicians, none of them big names outside that world but all great players. the drummer is Liam Genockey who i think played with Fairport Convention or something
What a powerful insightful musical song. I play this SO LOUDLY at home, and play ridiculous "air sax" and "air trumpet" all acroos my front room. No other voice can do it. And what an amamzing, loyal, loving, powerful bunch of musicians seem to congragate around Robert! I love them all.
I love the music of Robert, he was one of my livelihood axis in the 70´s, so the gratitude is still now infinity...
I´m composer too, and created two years ago a theme dedicated to Robert; I hope he could listen it some day, but it isn´t still edited , and I couldn´t find the postal address to send him . If anybody knows this of Robert or can tell him this to give me it ... it will be fantastic .
Wonderful... , I ask me why can´t see the spaniards more documents like this from the far 70´s... may be because we are in Spain? Anyway, sweet Robert Wyatt singing this song here,... and the musicians and vocalist Jennifer Maidman, who I had the oportunity to see live in my city with Annie Whitehead band, very good performance, and very good musician J. Maidman, very subtle...
jennifer was born ian maidman, but is finally happy as jennifer. i have known her for 30 years. she is a spectacular musician and human being. her long-time partner is trombonist annie whitehead, seen in the video.

I wish I had bigger speakers hooked up to my computer! This song is marvellous, though I enjoy it at home on a bigger system. Brilliant. Turn up da volume. Is that Annie Whitehead glimpsed so briefly at the trombone? Go out and buy the SOUPSONGS album, where the title is spelled as Robert pronounces it, and Julie Tippets breaks fine glass with her beautiful shrieking!
Fantastic - I've never seen this before - when where who ????
