@bushofghosts1 I do it both ways, depending on the original samples being used. In this, the two kick samples complemented each other nicely, for instance, so it sounded better to just EQ and compress them together. If I had made the beat in Pro Tools, I'd be more likely to shape each sample individually.
@quazimododry This was done using Reason. There are some free or inexpensive shareware DAWs out there although I've not used them so others might be better able to comment. I think Reaper is supposed to be good. There are tonnes of free plugins available for making beats.
Great tutorial. Also for the people asking for the same samples, if you bought reason there's similar samples in : Reason factory sound-bank>Redrum drum kicks>xclusive drums-sorted.
@marcuelcajon There are indeed some great samples included with Reason. The ones I used specifically here are on my website (details in the video). And people should experiment with finding their own samples - or indeed making their own using synths if they are feeling brave!
you think in future you can build up the devices and tracks from a blank document to make it easier for people to follow along with (as i have seen done with hydlide24 and boyinaband tutorials)?
did you know you can just connect the CV gates on the back of the redrum so you can just press one button and play multiple samples? i've found that easier than having to copy each pattern to the track separately.
@oopo1 Yea, I use that technique to layer up samples sometimes. I like to keep kicks, snares and hats on seperate note lanes so that each one can easily be muted and solod and edited in the sequencer view. :)
@kxkarnage7 Hi - it's Reason 4 on PC. I just opened it through Propellerhead Record so you can see the Record sequencer in the background, and the transport panel looks slightly different. As I explain in the video, I wanted to import a sample of the song Watercolour as a reference track, so it was easier to do that in Record. But the beat itself is made all in Reason... :)
I just hit "subscribe", really enjoyed this one! I hope to see some more DnB in Reason tutorials. Maybe give us some bad-ass, non-linear, heavy bass line like NERO are using [which is sort-of dubstep sound, but it really fits DnB]. =]
@Tacadoband Highly - it's so quick and easy to use and just 'works' with very little set up. The mixing desk modelled on the famous SSL is incredible. I don't use it for final mixdown and mastering - that's all done in Pro Tools - but it's great for sketching out your track and getting guitar and vocals down quickly. Also, if you use Reason, it works perfectly, as Reason just opens within it with no fuss. Will check out your stuff!
@Tacadoband Hey pretty cool tunes on there - what are you currently recording into? I have similar aims of blending genres together (metal + trance + drum n bass mainly!) I'll be posting my first couple of tracks here and on my website ) soon, and it's always good to share ideas.
Nice Tutorial...Check out my Tutorial Channel....Cheers

great tutorial! So you do find that when layering drums it is better to eq them together as one instead of eqing them individually?

nice tutorial but I really wish Reason tutorials were done in 720p. I cant see any values on the dials and lcd's. Thanks tho.

Don't you not need to hold shift while creating the Spider Audio & Merger, as it automatically doesn't create any connections when created?
