I ride toe straps on my fixed gear. People have suggested I should go to clipless but I'd always be worried that I'd forget to unclip myself or that I did the screws too tight. Of course I learnt the hard way that if you pull the straps tight to your shoe, it is pretty much the same and you topple over. That one hurt, and the time after that, and the time after that, and yesterday. Damn, I've got to buy some normal pedals, or possibly buy a brain :)
@TemperatureIndicator Hahaha, loosen up your straps then! You don't have to run them velodrome tight. And when you buy clipless, you're also buying 2 or 3 falls with it. Some people get lucky and never fall but almost everyone falls a couple of times. You've just gotta accept it and be prepared for when you do fall.
@jdawg4334 I love the acceleration. I ride a fixed and always aim at beating cars at the starting line, ie the red light :) One day I may go to clipless plus only when they create some converses that have the clip on the bottom of it...I'm all about style :D
This is me three years ago, fell once at a red light. Thought I was gonna put my foot down for the light & forgot I had the new pedals on, & went right to my left & fell. lol. Haven't fallen since partly because of the shame, haha. Don't worry, it's easy but you tend to forget the first day, or so I'm told.
I fell at an intersection with my little dog in my backpack. He jump out, pissed on some bushes, while I was on the ground trying to un-clip, the whole intersection was watching, I had to chase my dog and put him back in my backpack, my bike did not have a kickstand, and I was on the tougher gears trying to make it through on the walk light.
I fell three times on my first week. Once going up hill, and came to a fall as I got tired. Second, at another uphill appraching a set of lights. Third, I came to a sudden stop behind a friend. We both laughed!!! LOLLL
I still haven't fallen in 3 years riding a road bike but the first week of going clipless I had a few near falls. Happened twice pulling into my driveway, came up to the garage door then realised that I was still clipped in but my feet were in the wrong position to allow me to twist out. Started to topple and the shear tug from my leg kicking out to balance myself pulled me out of the pedal. Looked funny and awkward as hell. Had a few similar incidences at stop signs, but no falls, luckily!
@Digitalfiendscom I had the same thing happen to me when I was coming out of the bicycle store parking lot, I thought I was going down for sure but the force of my leg trying to balance me saved me. I was inches from the ground.
i survived my first ride out on clipless. Boy its like learning to ride. The embarrassment is more painful than the physical pain experienced or the damage to the bicycle... Good to see you could ride it off and get going...
it happened to me also during rush hour the car in front of me suddenly stop due to traffic. i dont have anymore time to react, next thing i knew im lying on the ground luckily there's no car beside me.
@FieroMan123 ha ha impossible...you will fall....not if..but when....it happens to the best of us....so if you are going to go clipless then get used to the idea that you will at sometime fall..o'h and get a sense of humor because when people are laughing at you all you can do is laugh too...o'h and have fun
Happens to the best of us.

It's like stalling with a manual.

It's actually worse than stalling a car lol.

The decent side of London, if you were on the wrong side of the tracks you'd be still lying there in the street with the bike missing,

I was told that it was inevitable that you eventually take a tumble when clipless...and it happened on my first day!
Still...was nice of that guy to help.
