Did I mention Captain Beefheart? I don't think I've ever said much about him at all, or probably ever will.
I believe I know what I'm takling about. My mother went out and paid the £1 or whatever it cost for Magical Mystery Tour back in 1967- so I do know the album. "I am the Walrus" is still a classic- of its type.
"I was the Walrus! Paul wasn't the walrus! I was just saying that to be nice, but I was actually the walrus!"
If you leave a few seconds of silence after "Day in the Life" and then play in "Strawberry Fields", then it's OK. Otherwise, it's nowhere near as good as "Revolver". The Magical Mystery Tour EP was a complete ragbag and the best things about the film were the "I am the Walrus" and the Bonzo Dog band (despite the strip club performance). I don't think much of the Beatles' 1967 output- it was all heading downhill for them while other bands became more inventive and successful.
@anonUK Couldn't disagree more. I'll take Pepper, even without Penny Lane & SFF which were supposed to be included before Capitol's insistence on singles beforehand, over Revolver. And Magical Mystery Tour ep? There's an entire album's worth of music on it. Nothing in '67 or the next couple of years was more inventive than Walrus & SFF. What, Craptain Beefheart?! OVERRATED! What's 'inventive' about Revolver, aside from TNK? Plus, 'IWTTY' & 'AYBCS' are hardly brilliant or groundbreaking.
Better than Sgt. Pepper's but It's not better than Piper at the Gates of Dawn. It's a one of diamonds psychedelic rock ever. Cool acid, this is music, this is art and first concept album.
Your on crack jim......Sgt Pepper is muscally the greatest album of all time, piper and pepperis waaaaaay better than SF sorrow, not to say it isnt a kick ass album, but come one get real, piper and pepper kicks it ass
This song is actually pretty tragic when heard in the context of the S.F. Sorrow album, since it basically describes how the main character's fiance dies.
I 1st hear this when i was on acid 15 years ago, I sounded like the walls were melting, the whole album is great and the singles "defecting grey" ect. If you like this listen to Caravans album "If i could do it all over again i'd do it all over you" also, i'm sure you would like
SF Sorrow and Parachute should be in the Music Hall of Fame. These albums have no equals. SF Sorrow was actually the first concept album (before Tommy). I became addicted to that album and recently bought it on iTunes. Thanks for posting this song on You Tube. This will help give them the recognition they so deserve.
I agree 100% about S.F. Sorrow. That album, in my mind, is better than Sgt. Pepper's or Piper at the Gates of Dawn. I can't remember how many copies I bought of that album, vinyl, CD, remastered CD and the belated live version. I'll listen to that album for the rest of my life, it never gets boring.
Parachute is great, but not quite in the same league, in my opinion.
I hate to rectify such a congenial comment, but S.F. Sorrow has said to have been the first "Rock Opera" not the first concept album. Concept albums date back to the days of the Amercian Depression when cats like Lee Wiley were composing albums. Fast forward 30 years..Sgt.Pepper's came out in the summer of 67.
BRILLIANT song ! In every aspect of the word . Pretty Things was one of the very few really original bands . They never got the success they deserved , somehow .
"This balloon, burning" man this is a really great band
and some groovy lyrics...thnx for posting it...peace and love

Never understood the fuss about Pepper..its a strong album but too many sugary McCartney love songs...and the Lennon tunes arent his best..IMHO

I don't know why people love early Barrett Pink Floyd. I didn't catch on that really, too much psychedelic for nothing.

I'd say its just as good Piper at the Gates of Dawn, you can't really compare these albums though.
fiendwithoutaface66 2 years ago
@fiendwithoutaface66 One thing those two albums had in common was the producer: Hurricane Smith. Floyd didn't like him. Pretty things loved him.

OF all the so called rock operas this is the one that holds together best as a narrative

this song is way ahead of its time. It almost sounds like it can be made in the 80s

No, the first concept album is, perhaps, Nirvana's "The Story of Simon Simopath", from October 1967. Ritish Nirvana, of course!
Alecu 3 years ago 2
..and what a brilliant album Simon Simopath was too. British psychedelia at it's best.

Arguably the first concept album is Freak Out by The Mothers of Invention (1966)

Great song off the stunning S.F.Sorrow album, which I personally rate higher than Sgt. Pepper's - and that's a Beatles fan talking.
