really love the opening..one of the fines openings in a hindi move..everything just blends in perfectly..the song, the scenery. so sad they don't make movies like these anymore.miss the 80's.
really, feeling of the movie is itself soo strange seriously cannot define it....& songs with its mystical music .....is complete nostalgia...
when saw it 1st time dint knew much about the movie but as it progrsd couldnt help watching over....but sad that time cldnt see the ending....later after a long time saw the ending...loved the movie...
80's movies has some magic...nostalgia...eternal music & songs...lovely...
@welcomeenquiry this place is not north east my friend ,this is my native place lonavla & khandala (Maharashtra)hill station,INS Shivaji(at 0:17)ulhas water fall(at 1:05), & mumbai pune railway route in sahyadri(at 1:26),dukes nose(at 2:39)
See Gulzar saab's composition.... Great sound mixing.... whistling of train, a flowing fountain, rain drops on leaves - all visuals say more than the words together and on top of it Ashaji's sweet voice!!!!!!!! Thank you very much.
m totally agree with u canadianfemale1. it really reminds something, what .. that i dont know. when i saw this movie believe; i really very depressed for days.
Shaakhon pe patte the...... (there were leaves on the branches) Patton pe boonde thi...... (There were droplets on the leaves) Boondo mein paani tha.... (there was water in the droplets) Paani mein aasoon the.... (and the water had tears in it). Dil mein gile bhi the.... (The heart had complaints) Pehle mile bhi the.... (we had met before also) Mil ke paraaye the.... (We were strangers after meeting - becoming one) Do humsaaye the... (We were two shadows as one)
Ashaji sang the original Bengali version of this song too!The story goes like this, there was no space in the water tight script of Ijaazat. Gulzar saab said no for it initially. But Pancham da insisted & we got this gem in the casting!

Chhoti si kahani se...... (From a small story)
Baarisho ke paani se...... (From the water of rains)
Saari wadi bhar gayi iiii..... (the whole valley has got filled)
Na jaane kyu uuuuuu......dil bhar gaya....
(Don't know why my heart has also filled)
Na jaane kyu....ankh bhar gayiii.....
(Don't know why my eyes have also filled - with water)

Rukti hain...thamti hain...
(Sometimes it stops)
Kabhi barasti hain....
(Sometimes it-rain- falls)
Baadlo pe pao rakhke....
(After keeping feet on the clouds)
Baarish machalti hain....
(rain becomes ecstatic)
Not a very good translation but hope it conveys the message.
