Dental Health & Information : Can Braces Correct an Underbite?

Ok, my underbite is hardly noticeable because my lower teeth are sort of "inclined" backwards! It's like a camouflage, LOL. I have no problems eating whatsoever and people always tell me I have a nice smile, I got braces today though so they can fix my bite a little bit because I still grind my teeth because they top ones are aaaaalmost touching the lower ones (that's my underbite, about 2-3 mm). Does anyone know if surgery is a good choice for a case like mine?

i had and underbite, and i got my braces of a few weeks ago and my teeth are moving back to an underbite again! :O and i had braces for 3 years so i dont know!

i have an underbite and i feel really really self-concious whenever i eat, talk or even smile. i really want to get braces and hope it can fix my teeth. i get really sad sometimes when looking at my teeth. :(

i have an underbite and am getting a braces consultation tomorrow.

not only will i need braces (with rubber bands i think. and maybe a retainer. i'll find out tomorrow) but i will also need head gear. I think i only need to wear the head gear at night though, THANK GOD. I would NEVER show my face again at school if i had to wear it during the day lol.

I put my teeth on top of eachother so my underbite isnt noticeable LOL

Thankfully I had a slight underbite and I did not have to go through surgery. It's been a hassle this whole process though. I got 4 teeth taken out at the same time, the braces made an openbite on me now but I still have about 10 months left to go. I can't wait to have them removed :D

people tease me alot sometimes. I'd rather keep my big nose than this if I had a choice :( . But anyone know if insurance can cover it? Im not rich, but not poor, just somewhere in between part kind of insurance. Do most insurances cover it?

@YOUdumbFAKA It depends on what insurance you have. Ask your parents to see if you have dental insurance. If you do, it will probably not cover over a certain percent of the total amount in which case your parents will have to pick up the rest of the tab. If anything, just ask your parents and see what they say.

I have an underbite as well. Thing is, my bottom teeth do not overlap my upper teeth. They sit directly on top of eachother and my bottom jaw is like, a millimeter out further than my upper jaw. If my bite were to progree in getting worse, then I would need surgery. However, if I got braces, I would be fine. I really hate it, but I know one day I'll get it fixed. I just don't know how long I'd have to wear braces for.

I'm 15 years old now. I had braces taken off about a year ago (I had a very slight underbite) and my teeth got fixed to a normal bite. Now my teeth are slowly shifting back to the way they were before, even though I wear my retainer literally 24/7. Currently, my top teeth are overlapping my bottom teeth slightly, but I'm afraid that my jaw is going to keep growing and eventually become an underbite again. Will getting braces for a second time help my situation? And when will my jaw stop growing?

Have had braces on for a few months now on upper teeth. Orthodontist tells me he'd like to put braces on bottom teeth as well. I haven't noticed any shift yet with my teeth but im still keeping positive.

I used to have an underbite but I had braces put on my teeth and it resolved the problem but i still have gap in my teeth when i bite down, i'll be getting surgery in a week to resolve that problem as well, 5 years of seeing an orthodontist was worth is going to be worth it :D

Did braces fix mine? No. Did a surgeon going in, breaking both my jaws, then shifting them and securing them with plates and screws? Yes. One of the single greatest decisions of my life.

Have an appt. at the end of April with Orthodontist. I believe some type of hardware is finally going onto my teeth!! The Dentist actually told me he was excited for me, because he knew that he could help me. I was surprised to hear him say that... but happy as well. Keep you all updated on this long journey. :)

Found out that I wont need oral surgery! Apparantly braces alone will correct my underbite. Braces will stay on for at least 2 years.

T_T I'm sad, I had an underbite when I was young. Then I had an orthodontist, and I got my expander which then fixed my underbite...but a few months later my bottom jaw grew, and I has an underbite again...(I now got braces on)

where the doctor pops the jaw out and pops it back in so that its aligned correctly.

It sounds so violently painful, he also mentions being asleep first

thankfully, my teeth now sit on top of each other.. almost a very, VERY slight overbite.
