I saw him last weekend giving a talk about the collection and playing some of the tracks, followed by a band The Family Elan, playing similar music, organised by The Bohemia Club in Hastings, UK. Totally superb. Buy the CDs, they are unique.
Awesome! I am a big fan of old Turkish music from 78s and have quite a collection of cds with this style of music and am definitely going to get this 3 cd set!
@pazmashen The set includes 8000 words of printed notes and another 3000 words of spoken notes included at the end of disc 3. It's a very complicated story. The set includes not only Armenian performers but also Greek, Maronite, Assyrian, etc. performers in New York. (The third disc is comprised of imported performances and is even more ethnically heterogeneous.) So, the wars referred to here are the Balkan Wars . I know Harold Hagopian's work, and love it; he is quoted directly in the notes.
A couple of other things to remember....there was no 'war' with each other...except the one the Turkish govt waged against its own citizens....Armenians did not leave the Ottoman Empire by choice or for 'opportunity'...they were escaping certain death, aka - a genocide. Also, please note that Harold Hagopian of Traditional Crossroads has been re-recording these old records for a long time now...and has done a superb job of it.
I have hundreds of Turkish and Armenian 78s that belonged to my grandparents...and I play them often. They are not such a mystery....they are audio result of 900 years of history.
Nice job on the promo; excellent restoration of the selections. You did a worthy job, Ian, bringing old 78s previously known only to specialists, to the American public, especially to those with ancestral ties to those groups. Looking forward to the release. /Karl S.

Ian's compilations always have beautiful music and are well put together. He's putting out some of the most magical sets of music.
