I heard that when they were filming the scene on the ferry bill owen was finding it very difficult to read his lines. It took 6 takes before he could get one right.

Peter sallis insisted that he go for a check up.

He did and the doctor diagnosed him with pancreatic cancer. He had 2 - 6 weeks to live.

This was the last episode to be filmed with bill owen as he died a few days after they completed it.

The first episodes of the next series had already been done.
