  • coffee shop music is the best man

  • There is a guy in the background that is actually doing the playing.

    OK OK It's a joke. I know it's a mirror.

Love the way this guy (and the guy in the mirror) plays.

    Ron

  • some of these questions makes one wonder if these are drop D thumpers and or C F G or E A B open only guitar player wannabes .. no concept of improvisation or Jazz, only rote memory parrots of tired old over played riffs (or actually bad attempts at the their original guitar god runs) seems so lame and kinda sad. wonder what their IQ's are anyways.

  • some of these what? will you explain ur quote some, and reccomend some "good jazz".

  • right on!

  • this is where you wanna be at on the guitar...taste,ear,licks,groove,feel!

  • Great to hear this work. Beautiful clean licks with more class than the typical head bang distortion guys.

    Good inspiration for practice.

    Thanks.

  • i want ya in my elevator :P

  • where do u get these jazz backtrackings?

  • Good, relly nice like elevator music, but it rlly ispiresme, to continue the hard work...

  • Man, I love the sound of that guitar...does that play as good as it looks like it does?

  • haha very cool

  • Dear Gareth68: how nice. I must tell you I am puzzled

    by your need to critisize.

  • Matt Otten is an impressive young player

    playing some tasty Jazz guitar.

  • very nice

  • matt otten :=) A GREAT PLAYER OF JAZZ!!

  • man dident miss a beat thats just great

  • I wish I was a jazz guitarist.

  • just found your vid's. sounds great. looking forward to hearing yur cd on cdbaby

  • lovely tone, just... boring, you need to try things other then quavers. and scales. progress from the past. im still learning too m8.

  • Are you sure that you are bored? If so, why tell

    others of your problem.

  • what r u on about? if u cnt take crititism then no one wud get better.

  • jazzer rules.... nice play

  • Nice.. Smooth playing. very fluid..

  • I don't know whether u were playing for the food festival in India at the Taj in Mumbai. I was the regular musician.

  • Sweet..

  • Wow...you have some cool guitars....

Do you have a Gibson L-5?

  • great

  • Nice music. Pretty sound.

  • How do you get that jazz tone, I just can't seem to get it

  • wow your really good!!!!

  • smoooth

  • archtops always sound nice

  • this so sweet tone ....

  • I thought your playing was clean and tight, very Joe Pass, great feel for single note lines, I'd like to hear you intertwine those neat little riffs with bigger chord voicings, à la Lenny Breau, I'm sure you are familiar with his work...keep up the good work!

  • you're awesome, but let yourself go. You're way too stuck on the method and structure, what sets apart players is their ability to convey feeling and capture the soul; i get that sometimes at a jazz club, but i haven't yet from you. You're very knowledgable, it shows. Try something a little looser perhaps more emotional, see how it sounds. Just some advice, take it or leave it.

  • Totally agree - technically perfect but no feeling.

  • yea before I saw these post I was going to say you need to be more agressive. Get loose.

  • Don't get so loose that you can't hold your mug.

  • Unique use of the vocabulary and a great feel!

  • yeah how do ya get that jazz guitar sound on the amp?

  • one question- how do you get that distinct jazz guitar sound on the amp

  • depends a lot on your technique, but you can do what you can with your gear by turning your mids high and your treb and bass lower on your amp. also, lower your tone knob a bit on your guitar and set it to the neck pickup.

  • I have done so for years - experimenting with gear. I even showed Mr Howard Roberts himself(co-founder of GIT)my Ibanez Howard Roberts fake guitar which didn´t amused him very much. So you are absolutely right in saying it´s not a matter of gear alone but of skill and phrasing.Perhaps we as guitarists should listen more to saxophone-players and less to the"Johnny-Speedfingers".Why is G.Benson singing along with his solos?:)I have never enjoyed a guitar-videos so much. Thanx Mr Otten.

  • jazz rules just as well as rock heavy metal and blues!

  • awesome, I want to be able to play Jazz guitar that good

  • anybody that has posted negative comments obviously has 2 problems:

1: they do not understand that music is an individual pursuit, its not like clothing, we do not play music to impress others and therefore do not care for your comments

2: they obviously cannot play jazz as anybody that can understands that it is the most liberating music known to man

  • Totally agree.

  • Totally agree.

  • Love the melodic minor stuff.

  • i love the jazz guitar(next to turntables) It's soooo soothing. Makes me feel like im flying

  • if your not in a band then be in one, you'll be famous. where you from anyway?

    kind regards.

  • clean pure wonderful music

  • great stuff. this stuff is harder to learn and play then shredding. super sofisticated melodies and improvs. keep it up matt. cheers from toronto!

  • hey which is the first tune? i know it but i can't remember.. i am a jazz guitar student and i liked a lot the stuff you play!!

  • wow this is awesomei wish i could play like that

  • jazz sucks !!

  • jazzz is awesum

  • andyloho, nothing in music is for newbs. Everything in music make up musical elements. JAZZ IS GREAT!

  • People don't undestand how good of a musician you are. Incredible job...keep up the good work. I agree with TheTravelingThumb, thats definitely not musical diarrhea.

  • Really stunning, such a soothing sound, without ever becoming bland or uninteresting. The sort of playing I aspire to, without a great deal of hope!!!!

Keep doing exactly what you're doing :)

  • taira tabs are for newbs. go learn the elements of music and how to read notes

  • notes are also for noobs, learn to learn it by hearing it, or telepathically dousche bag.

  • notes are for noobs? you are retarded, how do you expect to sight read things? are you supposed to hear it once then remember it and play it? you NEED to know how to read music

  • hi can i have the tabs to that? tanjiawei84@hotmail.com thanks!

  • A lot of Wes a lot of Pat alot of your own nicest player I've seen in a long time

  • aaaah i wanna get into playin jazz which is where im heading

  • You can hear that this musician is actually thinking about what to say through his instrument. Unlike some guitarists who play musical diarrhea, it's refreshing to hear style with class AND economy.

  • I Love Jazz Guitar, its great

  • Hey i really like your playing , im what scale do you usually play ?

  • I like the sound of that guitar

  • I agree with the others, I mean just try and resist that neck pickup:)

  • i disagree. you say that its not creative, but i think the opposite. He's using a very classic jazz tone that sounds sweet, and because its not so intrusive you dont get distracted by it and you concentrate on the playing...

    anyways, gorgeous playing matt

  • i love your sound aaaaa that's wonderfull.. ive just seen a thousand video of rocksolo....:/ always the same sound same thecnik same way pfffff thecnicaly good but no imagination. your we c your mouth move with yours note...the true jazz

you know Sylvain luc ? they are video on youtube.. i think he's one of the best guitarjazzplayer ;)

  • There's sound good tones in there.

    What amps? Polytone?

  • Wonderful Playing. Such a thoughful player and check out the "economy of motion" on both hands. Inspiring.

  • nice tone what is your setup?

  • wicked tone.. i liked the phrasing as well.. only critisism would be some of it sounded a bit slurred.. still owns me though.

  • this guy is nony smoothe but extremely tastefull.his technical ability is up there with all the great flat jazz pickers.

  • Hey man! Nice playing, very tasteful and musical.
