  • Why no triangles?

  • @ageshero if you put a mesh into mudbox u have to subdivide it to model it. u cant subdivide a model that has triangles.

  • Whats the sculpiting programe?

  • DId you use maya to model the rock and then mudbox to give detail?

  • wow how do you paint those BEAUTIFUL PICTURES!? using a gaphic tablet or all done by mouse O_O

  • ZBrush man.

  • 3D bob ross

  • his voice is so soothing, make him the voice actor for some type of sensai or zen master

  • @TheFuzzyBlanket his.. voice.. it is...so...sooooootthing.

  • @BlistersTube they sues their own engine thats work in progress, called phoenix engine

  • whats the ambient music you use in the background it's great

  • Wow, your voice has soothed my soul. I am truly in love with how tranquil your speech is. But on a more manly, and less sentimental note, what are you using for the sculpting app? I heard you used blender for a few thing, but that don't look like the blender release Ive got. Anyways, your stuff is really great.

  • How long did it actually take to create all the art assets showcased in this video?

  • What prgram is this?

  • @trrn13p he uses blender to make the 3d models, mudbox to sculpt them and photoshop cs5 to texture them

  • @MrBlackspoon Thanks

  • @MrBlackspoon Thanks for the info.

  • I seriously love the art of this game! Definitely going to preorder soon!

  • awesome Progress. One tipp Try to use some Worldposition depndent coloring for those stones so you get some variation :) keep up!

  • Not a single dislike, you must be doing something right.

  • @Tehaxis

Only because you care about likes and dislikes i will dislike this video. I bet you're one of those 'Justin bieber made _ accounts and thumbed down this video'

  • Not a single dislike, you must be doing something right.

  • i really like this stuf like every one else say the only thing that i didnt like was the last drawing i think that was one problem of lugaru the maps just stupid a giant rock in the middle of nowhere? i tought when i saw the fan made cat castle o whatever the maps will be like that obviously not all but i dont know thats just my opinion

  • mannn i love the music

  • What kind of tablet do you use?

  • Thank you so much for showing us your work flow!

  • Loving it.

I know you guys use Blender, a good tool for making the lower poly object is the shrinkwrap modifier. Just import the high res model, box model a basic low poly version around that with the amount of polys you think is best and then apply the modifier to the low poly, which will make it wrap around the high detail version pretty well. Ive done it a couple of times, but still, the manual technique you used in this video works great most of the time anyway.

  • soo beautiful *-*

  • I really like these art asset overview videos. As a 3d modeler it provides much inspiration.

  • WHAT PROGRAM. :C

  • awesome

  • very calm voice

  • whaleman is dead? o_O

sick video! i love those art asset overviews! this game is going to be huuuge!

  • Can anyone tell me, if you can import 3d's models? And if not, would it be possible to import Builings etc and even build your own city or something cool like this? If this is the case is will buy the game instantly!

  • @menuki95 I think you can import Xml. files =)

  • @menuki95 as TheGagunga said i think you can import Xml but hey the game is still in Alpha if the game does not have this feature you can suggest =P

  • You reflected on use Direcx 11 Tessalation?

  • You should work more on the textures of the ground. I mean c'mon.. make some grass that flows with the wind!

  • @Wouglas Agree, they should make a level with fields of wheat

  • this is so awesome! Your idea of putting the texture is just brilliant ! Great job.

  • wow this is really cool

  • I LOVE the music!

  • I like the idea of those naturally occurring monoliths. Really original.

  • What are these things supposed to be? Are they architecture of the past?

  • @yarow122 According to a previous art asset overview they are renewable natural resources that grow over time. They contain some metal or what that is used in building and forging.

  • @DAudIcI Cool.

  • I'm not against the 3D background for the manin menu such as in HL2, but I would strongly urge that the menu be active while the 3D background is still loading instead of having to wait for it to load all the damn time like in HL2. That was really annoying. Stream it in behind the already active menu. Mebbe just use a 2d image placeholder while it's loading.

  • @mannonc Yeah that is pretty annoying at times. Maybe simply adding an option to toggle it would be enough. Probably by release time it won't be more then a couple seconds for the average PC to load the 3D background up.

  • You should so make a book with all the concept art for this game.

  • I can't even imagine how you could get so much detail into a model without Mudbox.

  • @knoccout31 I never said they weren't ... lol I'm not a furry, but that's not the point.

  • Is there any estimate release date for this game??

  • Yeah, making the opening menu of the game based on one of those overlaid 3D scenes would be awesome. Nothing dramatic, just subtle enough to catch your eye. Maybe you could make them story-based, like Half-Life 2. In HL2 the opening menu's background would change based on what chapter of the game you were on.

  • @BloodWolf2k7 Tell your friends it's like the Redwall novels, that'll sound less weird.

  • @Drgamerful i was insulting the furry since furries are quite clearly faggots

calling this game furry is like calling bugs bunny furry

  • @knoccout31

how am I a faggot if I got a BJ from your mom?? Is your mom a man??

  • @simpsoncheat yeah

  • @knoccout31

then you came through a goatse

  • @simpsoncheat goatse is hot

  • what is this program? It looks very nice

  • @mazaisvilijs

When he creates the texture of the rock, and like "sculpt" it, I think he's using mudbox, and the first shape is made in blender, I think.

  • Art Assets are my fave videos of yours, they are really great.

  • It looks really beautyful :D

  • awesome! what program?

  • The care, time and quality is very pleasant to see come from a game developer.

And it is already starting to look better (quality wise) then alot of the current gen games.

  • @Smurfkiller921 NINJA-RABBIT-FIGHTING-GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME

  • @tidusian

    Ninjarabbitfighting game... nuff said :P

  • You guys should make a whole DVD off of these videos, just put them together in a continuous sequence. Maybe even as an addition to the actual game, or perhaps sell it individually.

  • @Nebuchadnezzaurus

It would be even cooler if the game had a commentary track like the latest Valve games so you could load up the youtube videos and have them running in the game engine while you play, triggered by markers in the world or something :)

  • @Nebuchadnezzaurus why sell them if it's on youtube? plus the game is most likely not going to be boxed, it's download only.

  • @andreylosev well, for one, it will be out there for the people who don't want to browse through the entirety of vaguely named Youtube videos ("hey, remember "Alpha 112 changes"?"), instead, they could have them all neatly labeled. Secondly, it's more money to the awesome developers which will encourage them to make more and better games.

What makes you say that the game won't be released in a regular boxed edition? I was so looking forward to buying one.

  • @Nebuchadnezzaurus Definitely, they should do this! Except add in some art tutorials as well. :D

  • high to low poly model,,, try retopology in blender

  • The concept art for the rocks had deep cracks in it and it is a shame that I didn't see it in the models. Great work otherwise.

  • So... beautiful...

  • You should have short cutscenes in that 3D concept art style. Maybe just to introduce story characters (like in Borderlands.)

    Its really pretty. :p

  • What was the program you used to create the normal map?

  • @shaurz Probably just baked inside 3dsmax

  • I can't wait to see how they'll make the seas. :D

  • Love those damn monoliths, they're like giant finger nails. I wanna pick at em'. Seeing that you use max Makes me all giddy inside. Love that program.

  • this game just keeps getting better and better! why havent i pre-orderd yet?!

  • I'm not sure about mudbox, but I know that zbrush allows you to export the normal map and the low poly mesh straight out of the software. Could be worth looking into, it would save you a couple steps.

  • @MrDrAwesomepants

the normal map generation in Zbrush isn't very good, i always export my stuff to another app to bake normal maps.

  • overgrowth is changing his style with these monoliths... u guys cant put too many of these rocks, otherwise the game will lose his asian style

  • @jpedrogoesahotmail there are different races, classes, and creatures in this game.. each of them lives a different life style and they have different art and fashion styles.

  • You mentioned looking at easier steps to generate the low poly. Maybe you have not heard of re-topology. Most tools should have it, I know blender does, but you create vertices that ray-trace the model. Therefore it is really easy to follow the mesh outline and you dont have to view front/top/side and pull vertices. You just create them right on the high-poly.

  • 4:39 It looks a little weird where the monoliths intersect with the ground, just because it's a hard break and you can see the individual polygons. I'd either break up the line with some kind of small rocks geometry where they intersect, or maybe you could just get away with projecting dirt and rock texture on the monolith very close to the ground.

    Just some thoughts.

  • Hey that looks like a planet at 2:00 just a funny shaped one

  • So in time-lapsed video that took about 5 minutes. How much time did it actually take to do the things in the video?

  • @mjfolkerts most likely on the order of hours, probably most of the time polishing the details, since you can't really skimp out on details on the final product

  • I could watch this kind of stuff all day. I'm a huge fan of 3D environment design, and love "behind the scenes" type material like this, to see it all come together.

    Thanks for posting!

  • i hope you guys have plenty of funds to finish the game and don't have to release it unfinished or with it not as good as it could have been i'm hoping i can preorder but being 13 there's issues with credit cards :(

  • what progs were used for the 3d models?

  • @impcnrd looks like they use Mudbox for high poly stuff and 3DS Max for low poly.

  • These monoliths deserve to be super dark and glossy. Like awesome nail-polished rocks. And the surrounding rocks, grass, and all, should be affected graphically, maybe in colors, reflections. Or maybe some weird things growing all around, to show : This is an awesome, growing, living magic rock !

  • @lllMephisto I agree, I think something needs to be adding to make the monoliths more "out of place" or mysterious.

  • he has such a pacefull voice

  • They should stop calling it next gen. I mean we're 4 years into the generation.

  • such a relaxing music, i wonder where i can find it

  • @hignejax The music is from the Overgrowth soundtrack (I believe it's Ambient 4) which you can find here on youtube (wolfiregames has a playlist for the soundtrack). @SupaGrowby glad you like it :)

  • The music is beautiful

  • Base meshes can use triangles, they subdivide in exactly the same way as a quad loop end. (I forget if there's actually a name for that)

  • ive never seen any water in the game, can the engine render any water at this point of the development?

  • i have no words to discribe the epicness... gotakulakutoa? see there arent words to discribe it xD

  • Start preorder Overgrwoth, it's gonna own

I've already pre-ordered and it's going to be best game ever

  • Beautiful, Thumbs down if you think this already looks beautiful...

  • @CWonderer24 What? Surely you would want to whore postitive thumbs rather than negative ones.

  • @TheDefiantBadger I was just curious will i really get negative thumbs or not)

  • Only Aubrey can make drawing a rock look awesome.

  • Ooo, loved the concept/depth thing at the end of the vid!

  • I haven't preorderd the game but I can't stop watching these videos! I really should preorder it (but im broke)

  • Hey, maybe you could use the 3D Concept art for cutscenes or a menu background.

    That would be awesome

  • @thelooker28 I second that

  • I love these art overviews. so good i'll watch it again

  • oh man this video is sooo relaxing. sooooo relaxing. please do one that is one hour long

  • I don't really like the texture on these :S

Well anyway, your game looks amazing!

  • @EllOEllproductions how do you mean?

  • I don't comment much, but I've watched every single video for Overgrowth the day you post them. They're fascinating to watch, and really show what a group of only a few people can do. Great work :)

  • @EllOEllproductions I have seen no indication of that whatsoever up until now really doubt it...why do u ask?

  • Thick vegetation is needed to fully emulate the atmosphere in your awesome concept art.

  • I like the music. Sounds very Native.

  • I love these art assets!! :D and I'm thinking of preordering the game but before that I'd like to know what kind of gameplay there will be (:

  • wolfire have a lot of quality developers and graphics designers

  • @BitsRule "We're a team of four guys working hard to make an awesome game." when your at the pre order screen, Also im pretty sure Aubrey is the graphics designer while jeff and david are scripting and id really like to know what john is doing i know he's on the contact help and advertise side and im sure he does something else but yea

  • @Superyndaaa wait so are you part of wolfire

  • @BitsRule Nah, it would be pretty awesome if i were but im not that good with this stuff yet

  • My words have no hope of expressing the awesome, so I won't even try.

    Keep making these videos please!

  • Is turner running around on Whaleman's bones?

  • @Djemps they say those are "crystal formation" that grow out of the earth with time :P

  • Great as usual!

  • ZBrush >mudbox :D

  • @cosy18 I like both, but if I had to choose then it would be zbrush

  • This game gets better and better

  • 4:47 =O Awesome

  • What app do you use to do teh models?

  • @TheKiimii looked like 3ds max

  • Jaw-drop. Wonderful work!

  • I love how you're taking us through every step of creating this game.

It's great seeing what you base your ideas on and knowing your thought process throughout the game creation.

  • Awesome!
