my city has unmarked cars and they are kinda scary because they are usually really old junky cars that you would never think are police cars, but they use them to pull people over for anything even speeding.
In PA it is annoying, beacuse alot of cops do not have any markings on their vehicles, nor roof lightbars, so unless your from that area that you are in and recognize the cars, it is tough to tell a fake.
Then even some of the marked flat tops can be tough to tell beacuse they often lack markings on the front.
Then the state police unmarked crown vics have civilian plates on them.
And worse is the Zoning/Code enforcement guys that drive around in cop cars(or former).
Because here in Rockford, Illinois. Unmarked cars pull over people all the time.
But I wonder how long you can keep driving if you're in a dark area before the cops thinks you're actually trying to get away or try to get you in trouble for not stopping.
in clorado sense they dont make use get out of the car to much just leave the window half way rolled up (hands in veiw) and ask for there identification card and bussiness card.
I wish all departments laid it out clear like this. I've never been pulled over before (and never plan too either =P) but unmarked police make me uneasy. Any random schmuck can put sirens on their car. I wouldn't want an officer to ram me or shoot at me or something just because I wait pull over in a more populous place.
this is a good idea, i wish all departments in north america would follow this and make a rule so if your in an unmarked car then yout can pull any one over, people would be less scared
here a tip for anywhere in the states if its a crown vic the way to tell if its a cop look at the lights on the side marker you will see they are round bulbs if not round bulbs it not a real cop car all unmark crown vic will have round bulbs
@afcollege09 Depends on the state. Some states are all blue and some states may be all red or a combination of both. Typically blue is police and red is fire.
@MrTyler8877 Per Sargent Matthew Berchert (featured in the video), Midland used to have an unmarked Mustang fitting that description, and the officer driving it that was fully uniformed. Sargent Berchert said if someone is stopped and they want to verify the officer’s identity, they can call 911. Officers who pull a vehicle over call 911 beforehand with location, plate number, and vehicle description. Dispatch can tell the caller immediately that the person stopping them is an officer.
@mxrhodesjr ya i believe most federal, state, county, and local law enforcement agencies can perform a traffic stop on you from a unmarked vehicle, if ur unsure just ask for ID or like they said drive to the closet police station.
It's definitely a good idea that unmarked vehicles don't stop people for traffic offenses or other less serious issues. There have been plenty of situations all over where people didn't understand or didn't believe that real cops where stopping them or breaking into their homes. It's better, whenever possible, to have uniformed/marked cops and vehicles doing this. Also good the City of Midland informs people what THEIR policy or expectations are in the example of verifying an officer's ID.
This is a great video. Unfortunately there are clips on YouTube where people have done exactly this (in other jurisdictions) and -- even though the driver activated his 4-way flashers to indicate compliance -- when they finally got stopped, the cop was in a rage.
Unmarked cars in Georgia are only allowed out during the day. If one pulls you over at night, of course go to a well lit area and make sure they are a police officer. All police officers in Georgia have all blue lights. Officers driver a unmarked unit will (BY LAW) be wearing a black police uniform.(unless its a sheriff)...Please look for certain makes of cars like....Ford Crown Vic, Dodge Charger, Chevy Tahoe and Impala.......SAFE DRIVING EVERYONE...NOTE: These tips were for Georgia..!!..
here in Illinois we have alot of unmarked police units, they dont even say police on them. They are completely undercover cars. If you are also in a state such as i am that uses police cars like this. ALWAYS PULL OVER IN A POPULATED AREA. What i usually do if a unmarked unit is trying to stop me, i dial 9-1-1 right away and have them run the plate to tell me yes this is a real officer. STAY SAFE!!
@1decesaro I live in IL too, and have seen some pretty strange undercover cars. I like how Midlands undercovers won't pull anyone over, but in IL, any undercover will pull you over, be an Intrepid, Impala, or the strangest yet, a Grand Prix..
Here in canada we have low profile marked cars.. they are fully marked but are slick tops .... are tactical vehicles are usually chevy surburbans and our officers (unmarked cars) do make traffic stops but are required to have a marked unit show up.. best thing to do if your being pulled over by an "unmarked" unit is to slow down put your blinkers on and dial 911 and confirm its a police officer one thing is to make sure that you show the cop you relize he is there
I actually like the idea that their unmarked vehicles will not make a stop and rather call a marked patrol vehicle. That's how it should be for safety reasons and to deter impersonators. It's much harder to complete the uniform and decal the vehicle up if that's someone's MO. NYPD ceased the unmarked vehicles because of their lack of blue lighting and how red is very easy to come by for any lighting.
@CNNnewsKNDP Haha, not to mention if you live in a small town you will see the same unmarked cars pulling people over all the time, theres 3 under covers in my town and I see 2 of them quite often, One drives a chevy malibu and the other has a charger, and they stick out almost as much as patrol cars do in my town because the people know who they are
Steady burning lights can be bought anywhere, so that is meaningless. And, ALL emergency vehicles in California has a steady burning red light, not just LE. All other states, for everyones' safety, should stop unmarked patrol stops.

I Texas all the license plates on police cars say tax exempt under the state. That's how you can confirm in Texas a real cop.
