Female helms seem more likely - I find crewing these babys a lot of effort and i'm a 6 foot (reasonably fit) bloke!

Helming them is easier than helming lasers. you don't even have to hike, and only take the main downwind. Even the tillers are carbon so the helmosexuals don't have to hold the weight of aluminium!

Sorry craig. I know you're a bit ACDC when it comes to the old 9er/laser war, but crewing a 49er is exhausting! helming is stressfull, granted, and i can't really do it. But even so, i recon a women is more likely to helm than crew.

He's right actually - the 49er is an open class in the Olympics. I also know a few female crews around, though no helms. From the ISAF website: "The 49er is an open class, available to both men and women". Awesome video though!

i have been a 49er sailor (now, due to intensive work, i stopped for a while), and i think it's the best double dinghy ever.... and don't care about those who don't appreciate sailing... probably they only think about sailing just as the rich relaxed sport, and don't know that the heart of sailing is dinghy racing, and that it's full of technics, effort and sacrifice... like all true passionate sports. if you sail you know it, and it's all you need ;-)
