Salaam. You mention polygamy. I want to add that there are more women than men, at least in some parts of the world. Some women would not be able to have a husband if a good Muslim man were to marry only one. Marrying more than one wife requires treating both equally, e.g. provide appropriately for one and make sure the other wife has the same, protecting both to the same extent, etc. To not be fair is a sure punishment from Allah (SWT).

As Salaamu Alaikum, Sister. I grew up here in America, and received a lot of verbal attacks when I began wearing my hijab in the 8th grade. A Muslim woman's covering, e.g. hijab, loose-fitting clothes that are not transparent, etc. is a protection from Allah (SWT). A woman is not on display, and cannot be molested or mistreated. Immodest dress brings inappropriate behaviors from others, be it male or female. A Muslim woman's covering brings a respect.
Allah does not demand that we wear traditionally Middle-Eastern/Arab clothing to cover. I am African by culture and raised in America, the way I dress is modest because I respect myself enough to not want someone ogling me. I however don't believe I should be made to give up body comforts (wearing the hijab makes me dizzy, its uncomfortable because the bottom part sometimes is so tight I can't breath and its inconvenient when I paint) I make sacrifices to Allah, the hijab is not one of them.

Salaam. You mention polygamy. I want to add that there are more women than men, at least in some parts of the world. Some women would not be able to have a husband if a good Muslim man were to marry only one. Marrying more than one wife requires treating both equally, e.g. provide appropriately for one and make sure the other wife has the same, protecting both to the same extent, etc. To not be fair is a sure punishment from Allah (SWT).

Allah does not demand that we wear traditionally Middle-Eastern/Arab clothing to cover. I am African by culture and raised in America, the way I dress is modest because I respect myself enough to not want someone ogling me. I however don't believe I should be made to give up body comforts (wearing the hijab makes me dizzy, its uncomfortable because the bottom part sometimes is so tight I can't breath and its inconvenient when I paint) I make sacrifices to Allah, the hijab is not one of them.

It would be very difficult to show oppression in the quran to someone who accepts all those things as being justified by allah. When you have a completely blinded insight into what life COULD be in the freedom of God's love, you wouldn't know oppression if it was staring you right in the face. @philnoll...I'd like to ask a proper muslim scholar like hamza yusuf the following question...'When you were a young, raging with hormones, desiring women,and if someone had said to you at that point that you that women are prohibited for you....would you have listened to that advise ?" Spirituality is such an important requirement for humans to find meaning in life. why ask a homosexual to choose between spirituality and instinct? where does islam stand on this? Is this what u wanted to ask ?

@MrHamza74 No, I was asking about denominations. Like some Muslims cite Imams. I don't know how much authority Imams actually have, or if there's disagreement over it. But that's what I'm asking about.

@philnoll ...Good morning, I just woke up. Denominations? Ok, muslims do tend to fall into categorising themselves even though there is strict prohibition against sects and sectarianism. This is a sickness which is present in the muslim communities either out of ignorance or their cultural upbringing and their cultural understanding of Islam. But they are not denominations as such because they dont disagree on any of the fundamentals of Islam.

@philnoll continued...Many a times the difference of opinion or the issue of disagreement is very trivial. So its not what 'Islam is doing to us, its what we are doing to Islam'. We tend to reduce this universal faith into something very trivial.
