Hyenas are just scary animals. Most animals know that Hyenas rarely give up, their stamina, strong jaws and team work make the formidable predators. They may not have tried to kill any Hippo but biting them and screaming at them was obviously enough to scare them away. Would you run from a group of hungry Hyenas?
Those were probably pygmy hippos, a smaller, much less violent species of hippopotamidae. If they were normal hippos, well lets just say that those hyenas wouldn't be laughing for long. The videos on my right are proof of that.

Absolutely right! That person would be stupid for running away from a dangerous animal. We as humans have been taught that when there's an animal that's likely much faster than us as most are, the best chances we have of survival is to stand our ground. Doing that leaves the animal very hesitant and likely intimidated. The person would be all the more dumb to run away if he were with a big group of people that could all stand their ground together and scare off the animal

Hyenas are unstoppable in a pack. They circle like sharks, communicate like wolves, and attack like in patterns similar to orca. They are, in my opinion, the ultimate land predator.

The average speed of a lion is only 35mph, though, without those bursts of speed. Of course not many animals will be able to judge how fast a larger predator will chase after them. They would prefer having a high chance of escape rather than having a lower chance of standing their own ground.

Also, hyenas were never taught how fast lions run, so they obviously will instinctively run away instead of risking their life fighting an animal larger than they are. Humans do not naturally know that certain animals will run after them if they ran, they are only taught to do so from other humans and their experiences.
@Tonetare The same applies to leopards. A lone leopard will not typically attack a spotted hyena because they know they can get seriously injured, in the process of defending his/her meal. This would seriously impair the way they hunt. There is not "doctors" or "surgeons" in the savana that can really help them, so a hyena wouldn't want to risk getting killed when they know they can kill another animal and not risk injury from another predator.

In the long run, muscle mass can weigh an animal down, and because male lions also encompass more muscle mass than females this can cause them to run somewhat slower. The difference in the speeds is probably not much, but it isn't unrealistic to say that male lions may be somewhat slower than their female counterparts.

Lions ought to be specified in that regard because unlike other animals there's huge difference in the design between male and female. There's huge disparities not only in design but size as well. There aren't as many difference between male and females in other species but male lions and female lions look like different cats.

If they did have the courage to fight one on one, they would'nt do so bad. There is no way any kind of dog would defeat them, simply because they have one of the strongest jaws in the world. Male lions usually defeat them one on one because of sneak attacks in which they pounch on the neck. Female lions never win, and bears 1v1? Yes.

@Thewoog yeah prolly. Hyenas do have strong bite forces though. But there is another animal everbody forgets about, that actually has the strongest bite force on land, that is the Jaguar. Only the crocodilians have stronger bite forces on earth. And no animal comes close to the crocodile with bite force.
Not exactly, Jaguars and Clouded Leopards have the strongest bite force pound for pound but it's still not as strong as some animals. Lions and Tigers both beat the Jaguar in biteforce as do Hyenas and other animals. I think the strongest biteforce and certainly the bite that would do the most damage is that of an Orca.
But it doesn't matter much anyway, if they can bite through flesh and bone, then the biteforce is equally as dangerous.

Biting pressure will vary on different surfaces in comparison to force which is just a raw measurement.
So for example if a crocodile bit down on one of those stick thingys that they would get a measurement. If an Orca bit down it would break the thing.

Hippos were nervous for there calf's, if you go to 1.04 you'll see a handful of baby's there. Perhaps the adults did not want to chance a scrap with those hyenas in the dark in case one of there calves got caught up in it. @Thewoog yeah prolly. Hyenas do have strong bite forces though. But there is another animal everbody forgets about, that actually has the strongest bite force on land, that is the Jaguar. Only the crocodilians have stronger bite forces on earth. And no animal comes close to the crocodile with bite force.

Not exactly, Jaguars and Clouded Leopards have the strongest bite force pound for pound but it's still not as strong as some animals. Lions and Tigers both beat the Jaguar in biteforce as do Hyenas and other animals. I think the strongest biteforce and certainly the bite that would do the most damage is that of an Orca.
But it doesn't matter much anyway, if they can bite through flesh and bone, then the biteforce is equally as dangerous.

@MrFeatherr There is no way in this or any other galaxy that an orca has a stronger bite force than a 2,500 pound salt water crocodile. We're talking 4,500 pounds per square inch. Absolutely nothing on earth has a stronger bite force pressure wise. Now i'm not saying damage wise cuz yeah the orca and probably the great white do the most damage when biting. But not pounds of pressure.

Ah... But you see you have just spoken about two completely different things... Bite force, is not bite pressure, one is a unit of force and one is a unit of pressue.
Biting pressure will vary on different surfaces in comparison to force which is just a raw measurement.
So for example if a crocodile bit down on one of those stick thingys that they would get a measurement. If an Orca bit down it would break the thing.

Hippos were nervous for there calf's, if you go to 1.04 you'll see a handful of baby's there. Perhaps the adults did not want to chance a scrap with those hyenas in the dark in case one of there calves got caught up in it. Usually a hippo can take on a pride of lions but things are always different with kids involved!

actually seems like hippos will aggressively attack crocodiles but just "run" from lions, hyenas etc. might just not fight on land at all, so might just fight in water where they generally run off to.
