I believe they do the same once the drags have cleared Crawford hill, since they use manned helpers over that grade. The same thing is done on the Bozeman pass where MRL manned helpers disconnect in this manner. Just imagine having to stop and getting your train up to speed again, so why not uncouple without stopping the whole thing...efficiency.
OK, now that was cool!! I've never seen that operaton before! I'm not even sure that would be allowed here in Ontario. Very interesting...thanks for sharing this!
@sfo1164 Hey sfo1164. Yeah that disconnect took me by surprise. Saw many southbound trains waiting in sidings as I was traveling north. So I decided to stop at a bridge I know of and see what happens. Guess I got lucky. Thought I would share.
@Cornelu Hey Cornel, Thanks. Yeah, that was an empty coal train in a siding waiting for the northbound train to go by. I was traveling north and saw several southbound trains waiting along the way and green lights to the north all the way. Couldn't see any train lights behind me so I decided to stop on a bridge and wait. That disconnect surprised me.
Parkman siding. Helper had a 'helper link' that actually worked.

Wow! That was awesome. I've never seen that before. Was that another train next to it or just a bunch of cars parked in a siding?
