@MrJeepsters BBC had a clip of the France match 1971, Barry tackling, JPR intercept pass and then he charged down the touchline, sidesteps every now and then, and past to Gareth who then went in at the corner, like he did the same for the BaBaas a couple of years later in Cardiff. Had the link on my old computer before the hard disk packed up on it. Tried looking on the Beeb site just, but can't find it. Cliff Morgan commentating for the beeb that day in Paris, 1971.
They were very good, the Welsh boys, but don't forget that at that time the Welsh schools system had two sessions of PE a week, whereas other countries only had one, so the Welsh kids coming through into top class Rugby were fitter than their English counterparts.

His feet were like a blur after he picked that ball up. He picked it up in such a tight space, yet not one of the opposition could get near him. Guess that is why he will be forever known as "The King".
Never mind stats and results. Just look at the silky flowing run, the graceful movement. Comparing Barry with George Best is a tired cliche really but it is so true. Both were unequalled in their ability to play their game with elegant gracefulness.
@tigerarmyrule Strange, i was just coming here after thinking of George Best and Barry John- probably the most talented geniuses in their sports- beaten by a horse at the BBC sports personality of the year 1971
That generation Welsh Rugby players grew up with Games lessons twice a week. That's why they were much fitter. Plus the disorganised selection system in the England team, and you can see the result. In the 80s however, the school system in Wales allowed games only once a week. The Welsh boys coming up through the ranks were not as fit as John, Edwards, JPR, JJ Williams before them.
Plenty of room for sentimentality here. This is a video of probably one of the best rugby players who has ever played the game. A real Genius. His try against NZ Universities in 1971, that I saw when I was 10 will stay with me forever.
The last 10 seconds of the YouTube video entitled "Gwyn Thomas On Welsh Rugby" shows the same try but from behind the posts. Looks even better from that perspective.

@kelvinl228 Just read the article, and it's great. I really loved the quote about Barry rolling his eyes and his opponent falling over. He really was "The King".
From 1989 to 1992 i attended Trinity College Carmarthen in West Wales and for two of those years i slept in the high rise tower block next to the students union.
My room number was Tower 2E the very same room GOD slept in (Barry John) and i was not aware of it.
The college had a good Rugby team,
just imagine if they had realised i was sleeping on hallowed ground - I could i charged them a £5 a night just to sleep there.
The number 13 is Keith Jarrett who famously scored 19 points on his debut against England as an 18 year old in 1967. He went to rugby league in 1969 but sadly had to retire at the age of 25 due to a stroke. Could have been one of the greats.
Phil Bennett was a very great player but Barry John was in a class of his own. He was quite simply the greatest rugby genius of the last forty years. It was not so much a matter of natural gifts, though he had those in abundance, as of intelligence and supreme confidence. I saw him play perhaps fifteen times and he always bossed the game completely. The other teams knew they were beaten even before they went on the pitch.
You may be right. There are not enough clips it seems of him playing on TV to show that though. The clips i have seen show a decisive and elusive runner but I still prefer watching bennett in full flow and i still think he had the best side step I have ever seen!!!
@moveonupcb Bennett was a dazzling sidestepper but Barry John was a supreme general, with an aura and time to spare, a better all round kicker who destroyed the All Blacks in 71. John was senior partner even to Gareth Edwards who was then dominant for the rest of his career after John retired- and the mind boggles at what John might have achieved if he hadn't retired early. But the adulation was too great, men shaking on meeting him, women curtsying - the king indeed.
tigerarmyrule makes a good comparison, with Johann Cruyff. Barry John was a general, so composed, so skilful. Fair enough to compare to George Best for exciting flair, but Barry was an overall controller. He had it all, not just a glider, he destroyed the All Blacks in the 1st test (+ others) with his kicking. That 71 Lions was the greatest back division ever assembled, + they had Merv at #8!
The greatest stand-off/fly-half. He was so good at his peak even (the widely acknowledged Pelé of Rugby) Gareth Edwards was in his shadow. In my time:
1.Barry John
2.Mark Ella
+
Dan Carter, Jonnie Wilkinson, Hugo Porta... i presume Jackie Kyle would be in the all-time mix. Women used to curtsy and men shook with excitement on meeting him. Is it right that adulation contributed to his early retirement?
I had a few pints with Barry John recently in a Cardiff pub. The man is a legend. If there was ever a more naturallly talented rugby footballer then I have yet to seen him. Dan Carter is good though!
No 13 was Keith Jarrett, scored 18pts on his debut against England in 1967 when only 18yrs old.Turned to Rugby League 2 years later.Career terminated when he suffered a stroke aged 24.
Why isn't there more footage of the Lions tour to NZ in 1971, that's when BJ was at his peak.
Honestly, that's a decent finish but let's not get carried away - he beat a couple of players but no more. I wish there were more film of this guy so I could see what the fuss is all about. I'm sure he is as good as everyone says but I'm still waiting to see.
Do you know if there are any DVD's available that have footage of him? Actually not just him but the whole Welsh side of the late 60's-late 70's? You hear so much about these guys but there seem to be so few clips ever played. Surely someone like the BBC must have televised (and therefore recorded) some of the old Five Nations matches played during that period? I would love to see more of those guys...
there are one or two bits of footage of the gang when they were just starting to shine, around 1971 on youtube i believe, NetResultSport is the guy that has them i think. vs Scotland?
Gwendraeth Grammar School. Anyway, I used to cut the grass for Mrs Llewelyn-Williams down in Porthyrhyd, so there. Anyway, I new a good part of the short history of Gwendraeth Grammar School. Whether Mr Llewelyn-Williams was there or not.
