  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! WHERE'S THE REST OF IT?!

  • somebody please give him a shoulder rest LOL

  • IS HE PLAYING ON ABAROQUE VIOLIN!?!?!

    WAAAAAAHHHH!!!!! AWESOME!!!

  • Tot romanii pun...

  • @mah150491 yeah and I think the violin is also barroc hahah (wich I think what I said is just obvious)

  • can you send me the full video please !!!!

  • Ein sehr heißes Pflaster, auf das sich Vengerov hier begibt! ;) Die falschen Noten sind vielleicht seinem Absoluten Gehör in Verbindung mit der "alten" Stimmung geschuldet!?

  • i dont like the tone of the violin poor

  • Man, I normally don't like Vengerov but I've come to realize that I really like some of his baroque/classical playing

  • o my is that a cello bow

  • @sasa30000 No, I think it's a barroc violin bow ^^

  • to get in tune with baroque music, he tuned his violin half a step down, and is holding the bow 5 inches above the norm. So all those Ds in the beginnings are really c sharps. i think.

  • nice violin

  • thank you, it's quite rare to see. only seen one footage where he uses baroque bow on modern violin. still not sure baroque violins had such bridge curvature =D but that's an endless talk on authenticity.

  • I didn't mean to sound arrogant, but I am a violinist and I know what I'm talking about. It is nothing to do with different editions; Bach wrote B flats - he wanted G minor (not G Major), followed by C minor; look at either his manuscript, or a correct edition. Vengerov is clearly intentionally playing B naturals - it's not just a slip up in concert - but he is nonetheless wrong (no matter how world-renowned or 'virtuoso' he is). By the way, what edition prints B naturals at that point?

  • @andrewesjames Thought that was a mistake

  • @andrewesjames Sorry mate but the scale is complete G minor by the way you are not a well informed violinist because you see violins don't have frets and because of that have no temperament and because of that the performer has the chance to use the most in tune notes for every scale with presicion, so in that way compared to equal temperament of the guitar you play in your free time yes the b flat differs.

  • "he plays completely wrong notes".....:-)

Course, vengerov is an amateur and you're a virtuoso....arrogance, my God...

  • To paraphrase what Rachel Barton Pine said ~ "A horse is nothing compared to a car. But a horse can jump hedges, a car can't." ;-)

  • I am sure that if at those times they had better "modern" instruments (not only string) as we have now, they would be just happy. It was just an imperfection. And we try to play on those imperfect instruments as if they sound any better. They do not ...

  • Have you ever played on a period instrument, violinoamore? How are you so sure they are imperfect?

  • Sure, more than you would ever think :)

  • If you are a period instrument player, then I am very much surprised that you take the position you do. Everyone I know in the early music field would concur with me that period instruments are perfectly suited to the music that was written for them, and it is pointless to talk about absolute standards of "perfection".

  • I play much more on "modern" violins, but I used to play on "period instruments". It is much more comfortable (and sounds better) to play on modern instruments (take for example recordings of Bach solo sonatas on "period" instruments - they all sound quite disturbing, leaving most of the beauty and majesty aside). The basic thing is - the opinion how this old music should sound and should be played is nothing more than a modern speculation, because no one knows how it was really played

  • If you want to hear good HIP recordings of the Bach solos, try Rachel Podger or John Holloway.

I'm curious about whether your dislike of period string instruments is directed solely toward the instruments themselves, or does it extend to the period bow as well. Surely you will grant that much of Bach's writing simply works better with a baroque bow.

  • Why not so many people praise medieval vuelas or however they were called? quite funny flatback round cuties. I would say baroque instruments have a kind of their unique sonority quite worth enjoying, but they are more like humble choir voices. modern violins have developed dramatic voice of some opera diva which can produce a lot more different colors and, as 'violinoamore' pointed, reveal some extra beauty of period music hard to express on period instruments. that's not HIP, I know..

  • Learn English, you asshole

  • go and find some cock to suck, homo! your comment sounds like you really need one

  • @assa123assa123 What a pile of crap.

  • interesting ! :) first time i hear / see him playing on period-instruments...

  • 5/5 !!! :>

  • the violin is tuned down half a step for all strings and the bow is held much higher than normal to reflect the traditional baroque violin.

  • Clean, but he rushes some notes or is this emphasis? I really can't tell.

Also to note, interesting how he holds the bow so high for this piece.

  • Ha-ha, that was funny. Great violinist. Looks like midget with this kind of bow holding. Still playing in modern style. What was the point of having baroque violin?

  • probably the sound bro, the violin he used sounds totally different from modern violins. even with his modern bowings, it still gives the music a different sound. so whether he plays in period style or not it still sounds different

  • Oh, I get it bro. It's like waring a tuxedo to the swimming pool. You can swim but it's different.

  • I assume this was from a while back, before Vengerov learned about period violin style. Here he plays like he has no notion of baroque style at all. He handles the baroque bow exactly like a modern bow (rhythms hammered out) and uses bowings that Bach never heard of.

  • And he plays completely wrong notes (B naturals, instead of flats) at 1:13-1:14

  • It actually depends on what edition of the music you have. When you are a world renowned soloist, you don't make huge mistakes like that. I would understand if it was some high school student, but its Vengerov. He knows what he is doing.

  • I can not comment this playing, I can only listen and be happy.

  • anyone notice the violin he is playing on? kind of odd hardware it has. and he is choking up on his bow a lot? was the style they played back then?

  • its a baroque violin with the super wide neck and what have you. And if you hold a modern bow like that, it performs much like a baroque bow.

  • Oh shit he did mess up and big time --

  • Did he mess up? Why did he play a B natural instead of a b flat...

  • its his way of improvising, im guessing. he also changed the E in the next chord to a D# (or in his tuning Eb to D). it makes hi..special? i dont know why he did it for sure

  • maxim vengerov is super!!

  • Oh , maxhansendk, just shut up with your crap....He is a great player and he is also a very nice guy. So, shut up.

  • Every violin-lover knows it? Jeez...what an arrogant idiot you are. You just blew your cover. I am a professional violinist and have been for over 30 years, and have performed with all the great current musicians, since I play with a top orchestra in the nation, as well as a top chamber orchestra. You have NO clue as to what you are talking about. LOL! Most of my pro violinist colleagues LOVE his playing. So go rant somewhere else where your arrogant bs is tolerated with like kind.

  • Well, there is earning a living, and then there is playing with the best groups which are extremely difficult to get into, and yes, you must be some sort of expert to find your way into the job. You on the other hand obviously know nothing about the professional world and are a wind bag full of him/herself and hot air. You are a know it all without knowledge. You put down others that are DOING it, when you have not one finger into it. THAT is a joke. Get a life.

  • OOOoooooo

Such haters. I hope your babies look like dogs. Maxim is the best and he is taking your insults and walking straight to the bank with them.

  • @dropsoffaith heeey i like dogs( come on dood

  • :40 - :50 , didnt like it =(

  • i love this piece and Maxim vengerov as an artist. however...umm...i think the phrasing of this piece is a lit intresting and unlike bach. and freankly the way he laid out the phrases kinda puts me to sleep...a great virtuoso nontheless :-) Viva la Musica!

DICHO CON EL MÁXIMO RESPETO A DOS EXTRAORDINARIOS INSTRUMENTISTAS.(alf).

  • why video so short? this is only about 1/5th of it

  • BRAVO ba

  • LOL Levon. He plays a few 'wrong' notes too - or has Vengerov-Russian-virtuoso-turned-Bach-scholar 'rediscovered' the correct version?

  • I don't like it...it's incredible because I love vengerov

  • woooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuu mas finooooxx ese videooo lo metooo diegoooo woooouuuuu jajajaj

  • hoho with Baroque violin bow technique and all.

Nevertheless I actually prefer Grumiaux's version of this. Also Maxim's haircut here is reminiscent of a Mormon. .
