A ship of the line refers to any ship strong enough to be considered valid in the "Line of Battle". The British Royal Navy came up with a rating system based on the amount of guns a ship had.

In pirates, Ships of the Line are ships only for National NOs, and are typically of the collossal hull size. These ships are also rated. (I.E. 4th Rate, 3rd Rate)
