A future civilization will one day solve this confusion by eliminating one of these words and define the chosen word to cover all bases. This, of course, will be after the great war.
@ummerrahh "'Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten." - George Orwell, 1984 :)
all u "shes so hot, well spoken chics are best, an intelligent girls are...etc" would nut if she just "hi" to you...losers..in the end you dont want a ho to quote the several definitions of a word but rather one that knows several way to make you nut. repeatedly...
@trufiend138 See what's funny is that you're simultaneously trying to imply that there's constantly someone riding on your dick and that you know all about how guys think...
too complicated. when i was a kid, i made up my own little mneumonic device for this. simply go in alphabetical order, and say "you affect something with an effect." alpha order. easy.
I have a very easy way of understanding the difference. The word "affect", is used in terms of emotion and the psyche. Just think of the word "affection."
Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh language studies are sooooooooooooooooo boring. Everything we know about language today will change 200 hundred years from now. Give me schematics and blue prints any day ahhhhh good ole schematics and blue prints.
@Roeshamboe05 But by the year 22010, if we are still around, then language students will be up to date on the changes made in the past 20 thousand years. Another note is that schematics also invoke a language, since they aren't an exact model, you need to understand this "schematic language" to be able to properly interpret what is written there.
I know what you mean. My ability to objectively assess her aesthetically has been compromised by the fact that she knows things and can probably outstrip me in an intelligent conversation; she's automatically attractive. Damn, guess I'll have to assess her brain and think of her as a person, or something like that. Don't you hate it when that happens?
Yikes, are all their female editors sexy? Damn. Not a single good looking girl knew anything about language or grammar when I was in high school... Shee-it!
@thekkl There is something really hot about a smart woman talking about words that really does it for me. There is also a certain vulnerability about Emily Brewster that I find um, er...seductive, I suppose.

@ummerrahh Or we will abandon English altogether in favor of a more logical language.

The weather affected everyone negatively, as it had a negative effect on everyone.
TheReaverOfDarkness 2 years ago
Now do one that involves all the possible definitions of both effect and affect. You may use no more than two sentences.
thekkl 2 years ago
I'll add one. What was the effect of the weather, and to what affect?
