Maybe if you want extra power with mobility, consider the MacBook Pro. It is more powerful than the standard MacBook with more features, though it is more expensive.
It's not as powerful or upgradeable as the Mac Pro (and that's a given since it's a notebook versus a tower), but that has always been the price for mobile computing.
And, as you say, "always keep in mind what you will be using it for." If all you will do is read e-mail and surf, the baseline MacBook will suffice.
