If you want to hear Lucille Ball sing in a show "designed" for her--get a copy of "Wildcat". Only ran 171 performances on Broadway but boasts having the song "Hey, Look Me Over" as part of it's score. Also, if you look closely, you'll see a young girl in the chorus just getting started in show business - named Valerie Harper.
Because of the harsh reviews that this movie, and in particular Miss Ball received, she never made another theatrical film. I think part of it was simply the timing. If it had been released a few years earlier, it might have received a different reception. 34 years later, this musical number has withstood the test of time. Lucy seems to glow. One would never know she had recovered from a broken leg before filming began. Note her high chorus line kicks even though she was in her 60s.
You, you, you are off your rocker locoman; there were many plantation owners that were benevolent and were loved by their plantation workers....but you don't hear much about it because it doesn't make for good drama...just like today in the news, you don't hear about the good. I'm not saying slavery was good, but plantations were not all evil...They were families and they took care of each other. There were many cases of plantation workers staying on with their master after emancipation.You-who?
Lucy is Mame. What a lady. She was amazing. She had a presence and so much talent and timing.
The whole movie was exceptionally cast - Robert Preston was fabulous too. I don't feel the character of Mame needed a spectacular singing voice - Lucy was perfect for the role. And what a spectacular production this is.
[Was Lucy by any chance a smoker - she seemed to have a voice that has that heavy smoker huskiness? ]
As much talent as there was in this song in this movie, the broadway production was far better; In dance and vocals. I encourage everyone to listen to the original broadway cast soundtrack starring Angela Lansbury. There are 6 part harmonies and many parts of the song simply left out of the movie version. It is a far more enjoyable experiace and it is available on itunes. If you're a fan of this show or song, 99 cents wont kill you and it will enrich the experiance by far.
Omg lucy totally makes this movie I guess you never really watched it or felt the emotion. This was the first "PG" movie I was allowed to see as a pup and I got to share it with my mom and my grandma who was so Mame. Its a wonderful movie and Lcuy is too.
Happy New Year!!!!!
While Angela Lansbury has a far superior voice, I don't think she would have been a good choice for the big screen, even if she had been a bigger name at the time. The Mame character was glamorous and bigger than life. It's one thing to pull that off on the stage (as Lansbury did) when the audience is somewhat removed from you, but I don't think she had the looks or presence to pull have pulled it off on the big screen. Lucy was tall, beautiful, glamorous and bigger than life like Mame.
I also saw this movie when I was a kid and it became one of my favourites since then. I wonder if it is already released in DVD... Thank's to whoever posted it from the bottom of my heart. And, of course, I love Lucy. Who doesn't?
Mame? That´s the one and only Lucy! No Rosalind, no Angela. I first saw this movie as a child and it´s my favorite one until now. Timeless music, timeless comedy, timeless Lucy - God bless her!
Back in 1974, I had the pleasure of running this film on 70mm filmstock. There is nothing like seeing this scene in 70mm, 6 track sound and on the BIG screen. A wonderful film, even though it was a flop at the box office, most industy people such as myself appreciate it for it's high cinematic quality. Thanks for posting.
Is this from the DVD?? I live in Ireland, and have no access to it, and so it would be really cool if you uploaded more scenes from it. great video though.
I'm a fan of Lucy period ;) But yeah, despite the flack the movie gets I thought it was pretty good--and I'm not the type of person that cares for musicals usually.
