  • I think if you listen to NWA - Gangsta Gangsta that the beat is fully made by a TR-808.

  • how would one go about recording this on some software or something???

  • I adore the sounds of the percussion on here - The kick, high hats, and snare drum - Such a nice sound! Wish I could get one of these, but I doubt that's likely.

  • TR-808 for the actual win. I want one, right now.

So I can just strut down the streets,

    Busting out some beats,

    Turning those dials,

    While getting some smiles.

Now I need one to make a beat for that rap.

  • it's not manufactured anymore.. do u guys know where I can get it?

  • @HIHNickel

    ebay

    Amazon

  • my homies and i broke into a nigger's house last week and came up on one of these.

i ended up selling it to a pawn shop for $70... fuck -- i wish i had known they were worth that much!!!

  • @b2mgayest:

you just gotta drop the N-bomb don't you??

you're the 'nigger' for using that word out of context

    and breaking into someones house.

karma is gonna butt fuck you

  • @b2mgayest you must be incredibley stupid to post a comment like that online

  • @b2mgayest $70 bucks??? thats crack head money! what pawn shop did you go too? that 808 goes for 2000 and up!

  • @b2mgayest From the sounds of it, it probably was your own house.

  • @b2mgayest you, sir, are the trash of humanrace

  • @b2mgayest Man, i hope catches you in their house and shoots your ass.

  • in years to come these will be worth alot! of money. Anyone who sells one needs to see a doctor!

  • i so want that

  • Now that's a machine.

  • These were made in 1980 and there still going top dollar. goes to show how iconic they are!

  • I honestly think the 808 is the most iconic drum machine in electronic music.

  • I have a Roland TD-4 V-drum kit, and it has an excellent TR-808 as one of the preset kits!

  • wait... you were selling this in 2009

but the video was posted in 2008 ._.

    I'm confused >.>

  • 707 and 808 are my fav

  • Do u know of a drum machine capable of this kinda beatz but new.cuz im really looking for a beat machine capable of doing some

80s synth drum sounds.cuz my korg synth needs a partner.thanks

  • That part (0:38) to (0:50) was beast

  • damn those beats sound pretty sick. i love the sound of this machine. i want a drum machine but there pretty expensive, i might get one someday, i want to this one or those old mpc's like the mpc60ii, so i could learn how to use it thoroughly then make a beat, cuz its better to kno your equipment before you start working on tracks

  • @skaterdj67 you can just get a sampler or some computer software and load some 808 drums into it. There's tons on sample cd's with 808, 909 and other drum sounds on them. I use Sony Acid Pro to do music prod.

  • The Roland TR-808 is the greatest drum machine ever invented. The kick, the snare, the cowbell, the rim-shot....It's amazing

  • man i want one

  • The tr 808 and linn drum are the greatest ever machines. You can use both in any song from reggae right upto simple pop, rock, soul ect...

    Legends!

  • awesome!

  • Lets say I want to use this for other music genres like soft rock, pop, and jazz. Can this machine get me a drum beat for soft rock, pop, and jazz?

  • @allennnnnn91 lol jazz? no, this can not swing, or play triplets i dont think. jazz, lol

  • southern hip hop has ruined this in the past few years

  • @omgcamlolz

Nah. Most of them are hacks who are just using 808-sounding samples in Fruity Loops. No one can ruin the legacy of the machine that helped put artists like Run DMC, Beastie Boys and LL Cool J on the map.

  • what is the correct way to eq 808 drums? just cut highs on the bd and cut lows on everything else? or is there another secret? I want the snap i hear on records but the 808 sounds very raw and dull on its own

  • @bonusbmusic just try some things out compressor will help

  • Awesome job dude!

  • 808s and heartbreak

actually, kanye's album used sounds more reminiscent of a 909, but still. pretty cool

  • rock da bells iii waaannnnnttttt one!!!!!

  • you are correct. i had to go take a look at the back. i realize that it is the master out i use whenever plugging in headphones. and the sound only comes out of 1 ear. my mistake.

  • BEST EVER =)

  • how expensive are these machines

  • @cvoliver between $2500 and $3000

  • SD???

  • he's recorded the video live from a cam, the mic on it aint gonna pick anything up below 60hz orwhatever the kick booms at.

  • what is the sound of one hand clap?

  • Does the 808 have a single handclap on it? In other words can you change the sound so that it sounds like a single handclap instead of 3 or 4 at the same time? thanks. LOL

  • have you ever heard one hand clapping itself, you should try that shit!

  • There is a Zen koan that goes something like "What is the sound of one hand clapping?".

  • @p99glock yes its there, but when you compress it a lot, and that is not so easy as it sounds

  • Comment removed

  • Old Electric Style.... Miami Bass Biatch

  • that beat at @1:45 just made my day dude. that shit SLAPS! 808 ftw

  • I keep wanting to spit out "Brass Monkey" or something when I hear the audio. : )

  • Wait so how does this thing work? Sorry Im new to this. Do you have to connect it to a keyboard or midi?

  • it´s working without midi, it has an internal sequencer.

  • It was made from 1980-1984 when MIDI and PC's were almost nonexistent, so that is a hard question to answer. lol

  • infamous

  • is this good for reggae riddims?

  • i been searching for the 36 x 24 picture and cant find any.. do you sell em? write me back

  • i want it

  • that beat at 156 is ME!!!

  • For some reason I adore that 808 cowbell. So iconic.

    Fantastic machine.

  • I had one back in 89. but it wasn't midi communication frendly with my 626.

  • You could have got a 707 or 727 as a middle man and set it as master, so you have Din & Midi out

  • how much is this

  • there like $2000 on ebay just depends

  • damn they dont have any for like 200 lol

  • well these were only made for around 18 months same with the tb-303, and so there was around 10,000 made.

there a bloody rare machine to get hold of.

  • You will NEVER find one that cheap. It's a famous, well-known drum machine whose sounds are very iconic. It's in high demand therefore and hard to find. Sorry to burst your bubble. :)

  • $1000 and up on ebay. This is an awesome machine.

  • We got the beat that 808

  • this is who the new jack swing sound was born

  • lol so sick.

  • Listen to that snare.....almost takes yer head off,

    Greatest drum machine ever!!

  • @okwilliam123 EXACTLY What I was typing when I realised you'd already said it! 808 kicks almost every other drum machine into touch!!! (I love the Oberheim DMX & the Linn drum too!)

  • this is the same drum machine that kanye west uses in most of the songs on 808s and heartbreak.

  • WRONG. He used the akai MPC which samples sounds from this Drum Machine

  • haha kinda ironic seeming he named his album after something which wasn't actually used on it

  • Anyone know what drum machine to get if you want to heavy beats like the prodigy? mainly fat of the type shit??

  • Roland MV-8800

  • If you get your hands on this thing, never let it go... This is a MUST have..

The best drum machine ever in the history of music..

Love it! Roland should bring it back..

2:10 make me wanna BreakDance hahahaha!

  • I am frikin desperate for one of these...not too fussed about a 303 or a 909...but this puppy i want!

  • I want one!

  • Cool. I have an MC-808 which was introduced in 2006, technology really has not changed all that much

  • héhé, it s thruly different, beleive me!

lmaby the way you programme beat didnt change, but the way the sound are generated is totaly different.

    Here we got Analog Punch

  • i like it! how much did you get that for?

  • I got it in 2002 for $800.00, sold it about a year ago for $1,200.00. It was pretty nice, no MIDI but it was customized with a headphone jack that was never put on these from the factory, nice if you just want to sit on the couch and make some beats :)

  • These Units continue to rise in value as '80s nostalgia builds; they're now fetching closer to $1,500 now on eBay.

  • @GPDII 808s come with a headphone jack.

  • @fooloof Um, No, they Do NOT come with a headphone jack from the factory, they come with audio outputs but not a headphone jack. Anyone else care to back me up on this?

  • @GPDII Yeah, I'll back you up on this. :-)

The TR-808 doesn't come with a headphone jack. You'll have to install one yourself if you want it. My friend has an 808, and I saw for myself that there are output jacks, but no headphone jack.

  • @GPDII Your right. I have a non-modified 808, and it has no headphone jack. It does have a mix output that you can use if you don't use the separate outs. But I use it with a dedicated mixer so I can EQ en pan every sound individually. That's really the best way to get the most out of the 808 sound.

  • @GPDII They do not come stock with a headphone jack.

  • @GPDII I believe you, who wants to listen to there own beats, I say get a place hopping.

  • @GPDII I second your motion.

  • @GPDII Yes! I care to back you up. The Roland TR-808 never came with a headphone jack at least not from the factory. Although, modification is always possible if you know what you are doing.

  • @GPDII Yeah mine is totally stock and only has the audio outs. i use an mpc2000xl with 808 samples for live use but they just don't compare (tho it does lots of other cool stuff like sampled breakbeats :) best alternative to a real 808 is to use loops from a real one (especially hi-hat and kick)

  • @GPDII I think what he means is that if you own a set of professional headphones with a 1/4 inch connector then yes the 808 has a jack for them. But most people own regular 1/8 inch headphones like those you would plug into an mp3 player or computer.

  • @GPDII hell no you crazy nut ,you sold it? lol

  • @GPDII maybe the person who is ACTUALLY TOUCHING THE MACHINE would know, there is NO 1/8 inch headphone jack on this bitch get real fooloof

  • @GPDII Yup, no audio outputs. But mine strangely seems to have a midi in or out next to the sync switch.

  • @fooloof i was thinking the same thing.

    beats a metronome!!!

  • you > kanye west

  • turd> kane west

  • LMAO!!!

  • what might people say is the best updated version of this? and preferably something that links with a pc with some nice software.

  • first time i've ever seen one of these in action. Only seen (and used) PC software versions of it before.

  • sick lol. seriously though

  • Does anyone know about the two versions? Supposedly one is for Japan and the other, the US (or everywhere else). Mine is just like this one. The "Japanese" one has a higher-pitched snare and the kick has a slightly shorter maximum decay. I know for a fact that the 2 versions exist because I used to know someone that had the other one. I never knew the history behind them. "Planet Rock" was produced using the other version (with the higher pitched snare).

  • The "higher pitched" snare is the same 808, what you need to do (rather than sample the sounds to use pitch) is slow down the track and record the drum snare and in playback that is how it sounds like a higher pitch of a drum box like the 808 (which has no pitch on except for the toms/congas)

  • I am most grateful for your reply, but it is evident beyond any doubt that you haven't the slightest notion of the device to which I refer. I have had the privilege of using two of these machines owned by two different persons, so I am absolutely certain that it exists. However, I am ignorant of its origins.

And the method you have described would be cumbersome and counterproductive to making any good music.

  • Pure drum machine porn :p

  • on the whole album i believe

  • I have one i had it for a while now, i personally think its fun to play with

  • i know someone commented on dre, search worldwide wreaking crew, and some of his other stuff, all the beats were like this, soooooooooo.

  • are 808s easy to use ?

    is there any skill involved?

  • very little skill.

    Look at Kanye

  • They are not too difficult to use. For your average 4/4 beat, the snares should be placed at 5 and 13. If you ever get your hands on one then you will know what I'm talking about.

  • can u make a love lockdown vid with your TR dawg

  • That's not true. You need to be able to adjust the pitch of the kick drum, which cannot be done on a factory 808.

  • Howard jones used 1 amongst many.

  • i want one of these so bad...lol

    =]

  • I wish I could my hands on a real TR-808.

  • Best808 demo on the tube.

I wished you had demo some long booming kick but I guess the audio prob wouldn't of picked them up.

The kicks boom and the snares spank that ass.

And it can sound subtle as hell too, just chack aphex twins ambient works.

  • Awesome Video u had that thing frickin clowing...had you been doing this same thing in 1984 you'd he a Hip-Hop Legend like RICK RUBIN! *LOL* get your Shell Toed Adidas

  • That thing is the SHIT!!!

  • It sounds like 2pac's Let Knowledge Drop :P I love the Cow Bells in the hiphop tracks^^

  • I don't have an 808, never owned one, they were made before I was born, so I just use the samples from the 808 in a tracker. I will say the sounds are freakin' sweet and the beats are funky fresh.

  • push me. and then just touch me. until i can get my, satisfaction.

  • Snare might as well be Indiana Jones crackin' the whip. BALLIN

  • lol

  • Hahaha good call

  • Reminds me on Newcleus

Jam on it! Jam on it! I say J-J-J-Jam on it!

  • Beautiful machine, thanks for posting this vid. Wish I owned one of these bad boys.

  • Aaaaaah sweet cowbell :D

  • you mean sweet ass hand claps. so crispy!

  • its my dream to have one of those great job

  • Those cow bells take me back to tha Beat Street and Breakin' dayz! Nice

  • rock that shit homie

  • today 08-08-08

    cool!!

  • haha

    nice observation

    next...09-09-09

  • Fresh like, unhh; Impala, unnh

    Crome hyrdolics, 808 drums

    You don't want, none

  • love this shit. retro toys at its best

  • I love old school beats like that. wipes the floor with all the shitty production by Eminem and Dr Dre for fags like 50 cent.

  • Man, how I wish, I had one of these, and a 303:(

  • i want those toys too! hahahahhaa

  • Save up then, I hope you have a spare 2 grand or so.

  • whats this button on the left u switch on/off?

  • lets you go between 2 beats, he always goes back to the original beat and alters the second.

  • Thats what its all about!

  • maaaaantronix

  • love that 80s sound it gives

  • ...mostly in part because it was made in the 80s.

  • really nice compression in that little box :)

would you like to sample a snare n clap for me?

i hate those wich are floating around on the internet, all the same :(

  • I actually made this video to show on my eBay auction when I sold it a few months ago, I will buy another one someday though. I do miss it :(

  • f1racerf1 "really nice compression in that little box :)

would you like to sample a snare n clap for me?

i hate those wich are floating around on the internet, all the same "

I've had mine for the greater part of 10 years and i have sampled it through many methods, 1st i used mics, & amps,2nd converted the signal to digital and input it to my computer and and enhanced/ trimmed it using soundtrack pro 2, 3rd and the the best i sampled directly into my new Fantom G and that sounds amazing

  • The nice new Fantom G actually has the original, TR-808, & TR-909 rhythm patches already factory installed. The Fantom series is made by Roland, (the original makers of the 808,& 909 ) so the samples are the real ones used from back in the day when they first invented the godfather drum machines. Whats ironic is the sounds that i sampled from the real 808 & 909 into my fantom g actually sound a little better, in weird quirky ways.Give me your email and i will send you the ones i sampled.

  • Yeah for some reason you can never replicate the 808s analog sounds perfectly they will always sound better out of the machine then from some sample or vst instrument replicating it.

  • ooooh weeeee

  • nice

  • classic

  • the original sub bass bad boy
