I think it has something to do with how the races say words. Not all black guys have deep smooth voices, for example. Some white guys have deep smooth voices. Some examples of why the "white singer only" thing wouldn't work:
Bobby Caldwell (actual singer) is Caucasian, but he has a very soulful voice and most people actually thought he was black when he first came out.
Darius Rucker, the lead singer of "Hootie and the Blowfish" is black, but a lot of people thought he was white when he first came out.
