1) This commercial RARELY aired. The one that was more frequently used was the thick-headed husband.

2) This was before the days when everyone bitched about every little thing on TV.

That's the joke! He's in a job interview, and completely without thinking, he's insulting the person who's going to ultimately decide if he's going to get hired by mispronouncing his name (Dumas, pronounced "doo-mas") as "Dumbass." With every time he stupidly mispronounces the guy's name, he lowers his chances of getting hired more and more. In the end, he proves himself to be "thick-headed" (dumb), just like how A&W Root Beer is "thick-headed" (as in, it has thick foam at the top).
