@Sonyphilia For some reason, Dr. Lawrence Ferrara, a music theorist and forensic musicologist tends to disagree with you in this specific matter. Similar chord progressions are everywhere, search for the 4 chord song by the Axis of Awesome or the Pachelbel rant.

Copyright law doesn't cover chord progressions. Therefore this isn't plagiarism, but the case of Satriani vs Coldplay could very easily be considered as plagiarism.
I agree. There are so many ways to arrange a composition, and after a while a collection of notes will fall together in a similar way to something else. It's the totality of the work that matters. Viva la Vida is a complete work and a few chords do not make it Stevens' song. Plus, to be honest, of the two, Viva la Vida makes sense. I am a Cat Stevens fan but I think he needs to stop talking. Every time he opens his mouth now he says something totally stupid.
Not a chance- stupid baseless argument. Go write a song tonite send it and well all ultimatley find a source. Read Some Plato and his theory on 'original' thought.
No, I would not say that Armageddon and Deep Impact are the same idea. Armageddon is a ridiculous action film, Deep Impact is a drama, and that's only one of many differences. Done.
To answer your call-out ultimate question, why can't we just listen to what appeals to us? Because firms, companies, streaming stations try to manipulate us and invest exuberant sums to place songs and because a lot of money is coming from it. If you have ever been a musician you wouldn't ask such a question. But to the accusation of plagiarism by Stevens/Islam ... ridiculous!!!
Many say Coldplay ripped off Cat Stevens. Actually they ripped off Joe Satriani, who maybe stole or got inspired in the song Frances Limon from Los Enanitos Verdes.
Cat Stevens's song and Coldplay's are not even similiar the way Joe Satriani's song is to Coldplay's.
Joe Satriani is sueing Coldplay for plagurism. This is actually beacuse "Viva la Vida" from Coldplay, and "If I Could Fly" from Joe, have the same rythm, melody, and coldplay sing Joe's guitar...
@Netbat63 The joe Satriani and Coldplay fued is over they agreed to a settlement. Plus most of the music from coldplay and other bands of the same genre all use the same chord progression. The chords used are also used by many other people. Coldplay just ripped of Joe's Melody line even though there song has a slightly different chords sequence, but both chords and melody are in the same key. Hence why they sound so alike.
OH HELL NO! "THE ALPHABET SONG" DID NOT JUST COPY THE "TWINKLE LITTLE STAR" SONG! FORGET COLD PLAY, NOBODY MESES WITH MY "TWINKLE LITTLE STAR" SONG! LMFAO
yah, they stole it from cat stevens. the first time I heard this coldplay song I recognized the steal. Anyone that knows foreigner suite can instantly see these f**ks stole it.
Easy. Because people shouldn't be allowed to become rich, famous and recognized for a song they didn't write. If people have no creativity or put no effort into their songwriting, they shouldn't get rewarded, but they do.
@Hem2Fiction He didn't take legal action, and he said they probably didn't do it on purpose, and that he didn't care. They robbed the melody though, if you want to have a look a that.
No, it has a similar melody as well. Personally, though, I don't think Coldplay stole it from Cat Stevens. They definitely stole it from Satriani though - it has exactly the same melody and feel, and nearly the same chord sequence (one chord is substituted).
I don't see ANYTHING similar between ALL the accusations and Coldplay. If you just throw in the instrumentals of Coldplay with the other, they line up mostly in rhythm. But just because it's not a very often used rhythm pattern doesn't mean they're plagiarized.
the part where coldplay sings "rule the world" is like the only part that sounds remotely similar in any allegations of plagarism with viva la vida and honestly you cannot sue someone over thee freaking notes cause if you could then the "C-B-G" melody in lady gaga's poker face would have had her sued intil her bankruptcy

I don't think that Coldplay or Satriani were the first to use this exact melody to these(or a very similar) set of chords.
there are certain melodies you hear and you think "I've heard this before"
this is not a coincidence, some times when a composer sings the most obvious thing to a chord change he comes up with something that's been used before .
@melovetorun Clearly you are not a musician, Viva and Cat both share the same note progression, the only difference being Viva is on Violin and Cat is using a piano. But I agree with the sentiment of this video, it's only natural that songs are going to start sounding like each other as almost every progression imaginable has been played.
You legally CAN'T copyright a chord progression, you can however copyright a melody. The melodies of these two song's are different in many ways, however, the melodies of the satch song and the coldplay song are too close.
I barely hear it with this one, I find it much more obvious with the Satriani version. Personally, I don't think the song was plagiarized, not intentionally at least.
Just saying but you must not know what you are talking about. Joe Satriani(not Satriana) is one of the most well known guitarists if you enjoy instrumentals.
Yes I'm aware of that,I've listened to him on many an occasion and been forced to listen to him n many an occasion by people who think he is humanity's greatest moment and never once have I been even close to being moved by his music.Which is fair enough, but the fact that he and his fans claim they are above someone like Coldplay just because Coldplay use vocals is pretty ludicrous especially since Satriani is the one petty enough to try sue them for a song which isn't even that similar.
I'm not going to argue with you about his however, you obviously can't listen to music and understand that it is the same chord progression however Coldplay has added some effects. Joe Satch is a beast, one of the greatest guitarists ever, no he isn't as good as others however just because you aren't moved by his music doesn't mean others aren't. You clearly don't play guitar because if you did you would understand how awesome he really is.
it's kinda similar, i mean, it would be clear that steven's song was an influence for "viva la vida" if it wasn't a CLEAN-CUT copy of "if i could fly" by Joe Satriani...
-.- How are they similar? The beat? Lets only play the beat of every song ever made, oh wait, most of them are the same. And Foreigner Suite sounds like twinkle twinkle little star.
Quite honestly, I see a great, if not a huge, difference between the songs. They're almost nothing alike! I guess the beat is similar, and Foreigner suite's melody is kinda-sorta similar to the melody of the singer, but overall they're completely distinct songs. Cat Stevens was stupid to sue over this.
I do hear the similarities but humour me and take a look at the Pachelbel Rant by Rob Paravonian. I guess If you look hard enough you can find it in the strangest ways.
all these accusations towards viva la vida are basically saying that any song that has the same chord structure and key as another is a copy. If this were the case, we would have a legal warfare between all the blues artists.
But if someone makes a gazillion dollars out of an idea that was already used on a recording, the other guy simply WILL NOT RELAX...
Coincidence do happen, but If you are a composer, you MUST always go all the way to figure out the source of your inspiration, ALWAYS.
The best case is what the Stones did when they realize their song 'anybody seen my baby, was just like KDLANG's Constant craving, gave her composer credit.
I play guitar and trombone. While Cat Steven's song is fairly different.
However, sorry HaloBeagle, but Joe Satriani's song has virtually the same chord progression (diatonic substitution on the first, no real difference) as Viva La Vida, and the melody is basically the same. There are some extra grace notes because satriani plays it on a guitar, but they they all start and end on the same chord tones. It's either a giant coincidence or Coldplay borrowed some material.

i play guitar and i hear the similarities. however they are in two completely different keys. the problem is the only difference between the chords are half steps so right away people think its the same.
and every single pop-punk songs has the same chords and chord progressions but no copyright infringements are being made.
vanilla ice got away with "sampleing" and so does the rest of "hip hop" see thats flat out stealing music. this viva la vida crap; eh not so much.
yeah...in my opinion, nobody stole from anyone, and certainly not coldplay or even satriani, because neither of them have a track record of plaigarism.
@gohsam2001 i did...they dont sound very alike at all, if anyone is sueing anybody it should be cat stevens sueing satch, cuz if i could fly and foreigner suite sound the most alike out of the 3
i don't think it sounds the same at all, but i think joe satrinis "if i could fly" and "viva la vida" are too alike. But - so what?! Both songs are great, why make a big deal out of it? Joe's probably getting lots of attention now, so in one way, this is a good thing for him. Sorry for my English!
The second half of this video perfectly sums up how ridiculous this argument is. Melodies get copied. ALL THE TIME. Chord progressions (there aren't actually that many!) get copied. ALL THE TIME. Just take a look at R&B and Hip Hop, borrowing all over the place. It's not a big deal! If you copy someone's lyrics, and sing it with the same melody, THEN you've actually got a point.
i wonder how many THOUSANDS of songs have the chord progression IV, V, I, vi.
if you couldn't repeat the progression, we'd only have about 10 songs, and no one would be legally able to create music anymore.. this however isn't the case.
wow. Even Coldplay has turned out to be just what I expected, like every other artist on the market: propagandist who are over-marketed mean whilst being over-paid. at least ray stevens is original
@evaaaaan1001 Are you fucking deaf? It's the exact same melody.
The creator of this video seemed to miss the point, too. The problem with this kind of thing is that they're profiting off of someone elses hard work.
All these people are just jealous that Coldplay created such a modern masterpiece and want to take some of their credit away lol.
Either that or theyre obsessively paranoid about their own work as nobody else seems to hear it.
You could probably find a tune from another 100 years ago that sounds like Cat Stevens too, everyone they thinks they originate everything, I'm sure he borrowed a lot too.
Not that I think coldplay even borrowed from him anyway.
@AtheistMovement You shoud have heard Cat's comments on the radio interview. He was obviously joking about what he said. He was just being funny. He didn't really intend to sue at all! This is evidence of how the media can make a tastefully humorous comment something worth debating! I'm ashamed by the Rolling Stones article in particular. They really made Cat look money-hungry. Absolutely ridiculous.. I suggest everyone lightens up and have a sense of humour!
another point ot mention this cat stevens song is around 20 minutes long and from the 16th minute or 17 minute theres a tune that souynds like viva la vidas tune
Cat Steven's said in an interview that he NEVER had any plans to take legal action... his son said, "Hey dad, doesn't this song sound like Foreigner Suite?" and if you take it apart, they sound very similar. He says that he would love to meet Coldplay to talk music, because their songs are quite alike. And I don't think Cat Steven is trying to take away their credit, seeing as he was (and still is) pretty famous and considered a great musician.
Very true! sometimes a certain rhythm or melody happens to work for two or more different songs, and the two songs don't really sound that similar... perhaps Coldplay was inspired by the tune, but they certainly didn't commit plagiarism...!
Hmm, I don't really hear it all that closely. And you are always going to have songs that sound similar. But really, in no way are they the same. They have different rhythms, tempo, meaning.
either viva la vida or foreigner suite, both are great songs, but I got suprised when viva la vida came out. they have enough brain to make something original, at least i thought that
ahahahhaha twinkle twinkle little star ahahahahahhahahahahahahah

The main problem is that Chris Martin is a prick and deserves to be hassled. So do Kanye, Brandon Flowers, and King Jerk Off (James Brown).

People are deaf these days! Sounds nothing like Viva La Vida( WORK OF ART)! vIVA COLDPLAY!
melovetorun 1 year ago
@melovetorun Clearly you are not a musician, Viva and Cat both share the same note progression, the only difference being Viva is on Violin and Cat is using a piano. But I agree with the sentiment of this video, it's only natural that songs are going to start sounding like each other as almost every progression imaginable has been played.
warrush 1 year ago
Oh Lord. This is just hilarious.
I actually think that Iron Maiden copied Elton John in Trooper. It sounds exactly like Part-time Love.
Hebbu99 1 year ago
You legally CAN'T copyright a chord progression, you can however copyright a melody. The melodies of these two song's are different in many ways, however, the melodies of the satch song and the coldplay song are too close.
MichaelGrah 1 year ago
there is similarity. and it is not the first time coldplay is charged for plagiarism. so maybe they do use the melodies of other songs.

I can kind of see a similarity, but it's not the same. I don't think Viva La Vida copied it.
SasukereturnsAgain 1 year ago
I barely hear it with this one, I find it much more obvious with the Satriani version. Personally, I don't think the song was plagiarized, not intentionally at least.
BobBoican 1 year ago 46
@BobBoican I agree I think it was cat stevens trying to get some publicity for his new album at the time.

to be fair coldplay sort of merged the two tracks

Surely Cat Stevens should be suing Joe Satriana then right? Both Cat Stevens and Satriana are gimps trying to get some attention.
davidHasselhoff 1 year ago
Just saying but you must not know what you are talking about. Joe Satriani(not Satriana) is one of the most well known guitarists if you enjoy instrumentals.
2VAproductions 1 year ago
Yes I'm aware of that,I've listened to him on many an occasion and been forced to listen to him n many an occasion by people who think he is humanity's greatest moment and never once have I been even close to being moved by his music.Which is fair enough, but the fact that he and his fans claim they are above someone like Coldplay just because Coldplay use vocals is pretty ludicrous especially since Satriani is the one petty enough to try sue them for a song which isn't even that similar.
davidHasselhoff 1 year ago 4
I'm not going to argue with you about his however, you obviously can't listen to music and understand that it is the same chord progression however Coldplay has added some effects. Joe Satch is a beast, one of the greatest guitarists ever, no he isn't as good as others however just because you aren't moved by his music doesn't mean others aren't. You clearly don't play guitar because if you did you would understand how awesome he really is.
2VAproductions 1 year ago
With a username like David Hasselhoff, you should not be trying to call Cat Stevens and Joe Satriana "gimps trying to get attention."

so....Cat Stevens then Los Enanitos Verdes then Joe Satriani and then coldplay, anyone else confused
tiger130 1 year ago 3
it's kinda similar, i mean, it would be clear that steven's song was an influence for "viva la vida" if it wasn't a CLEAN-CUT copy of "if i could fly" by Joe Satriani...

Hi there,
I do hear the similarities but humour me and take a look at the Pachelbel Rant by Rob Paravonian. I guess If you look hard enough you can find it in the strangest ways.
Greetings from Holland.
ralphm71 2 years ago
all these accusations towards viva la vida are basically saying that any song that has the same chord structure and key as another is a copy. If this were the case, we would have a legal warfare between all the blues artists.
seahopki 2 years ago 3
This is true, we should just relax and enjoy...

HandaCarr 2 years ago
they dont sound alike at all, and neither do satriani's song and viva la vida. how many of you assholes actually play an instrument?
HaloBeagle 2 years ago
perhaps everytime a chord is duplicated one should sue and claim copyright infringment . Dibs for D minor
stormvejr87 2 years ago 3
lol fineeee...but i call E minor
HaloBeagle 2 years ago
i play guitar and i hear the similarities. however they are in two completely different keys. the problem is the only difference between the chords are half steps so right away people think its the same.
and every single pop-punk songs has the same chords and chord progressions but no copyright infringements are being made.
vanilla ice got away with "sampleing" and so does the rest of "hip hop" see thats flat out stealing music. this viva la vida crap; eh not so much.
thexgoodxdays 2 years ago
yeah...in my opinion, nobody stole from anyone, and certainly not coldplay or even satriani, because neither of them have a track record of plaigarism.
HaloBeagle 2 years ago
I sure hope you listened to the beat. I sure did and can see the similarities.
gohsam2001 2 years ago
@gohsam2001 i did...they dont sound very alike at all, if anyone is sueing anybody it should be cat stevens sueing satch, cuz if i could fly and foreigner suite sound the most alike out of the 3
HaloBeagle 2 years ago
i don't think it sounds the same at all, but i think joe satrinis "if i could fly" and "viva la vida" are too alike. But - so what?! Both songs are great, why make a big deal out of it? Joe's probably getting lots of attention now, so in one way, this is a good thing for him. Sorry for my English!
mormorelsa 2 years ago 2
The second half of this video perfectly sums up how ridiculous this argument is. Melodies get copied. ALL THE TIME. Chord progressions (there aren't actually that many!) get copied. ALL THE TIME. Just take a look at R&B and Hip Hop, borrowing all over the place. It's not a big deal! If you copy someone's lyrics, and sing it with the same melody, THEN you've actually got a point.
Silly debate. It doesn't matter.
jaypianist26 2 years ago 3
@jaypianist26 Actually, in the case you're describing, it would be a cover song.

Amen! Finally someone that knows what they are talking about!
Ppl4daR 2 years ago
missing the point..
i wonder how many THOUSANDS of songs have the chord progression IV, V, I, vi.
if you couldn't repeat the progression, we'd only have about 10 songs, and no one would be legally able to create music anymore.. this however isn't the case.
mrcoffee999888 2 years ago

ProjectBurncan 1 year ago
@evaaaaan1001 the same rhythm exactly, and same chord progressions, although coldplay's is very dull

Walegu11 2 years ago
I don't hear the similarities at all.
AtheistMovement 2 years ago
@AtheistMovement You shoud have heard Cat's comments on the radio interview. He was obviously joking about what he said. He was just being funny. He didn't really intend to sue at all! This is evidence of how the media can make a tastefully humorous comment something worth debating! I'm ashamed by the Rolling Stones article in particular. They really made Cat look money-hungry. Absolutely ridiculous.. I suggest everyone lightens up and have a sense of humour!
Chordiegurl 2 years ago 2
OK so theres no comparison yes but coldplays main riff is exactly like satrianis song if i could fly
ineedalifeLTD 2 years ago
another point ot mention this cat stevens song is around 20 minutes long and from the 16th minute or 17 minute theres a tune that souynds like viva la vidas tune
ineedalifeLTD 2 years ago
Cat Steven's said in an interview that he NEVER had any plans to take legal action... his son said, "Hey dad, doesn't this song sound like Foreigner Suite?" and if you take it apart, they sound very similar. He says that he would love to meet Coldplay to talk music, because their songs are quite alike. And I don't think Cat Steven is trying to take away their credit, seeing as he was (and still is) pretty famous and considered a great musician.
Kuratako 2 years ago
Cat stevens has talent, coldplay are commercial fakers, created by greedy businessmen.
My 2 cents.
tsprojects1 2 years ago
Valid 2 cents.
Yet going a bit too far, imho.
I listened to this 10 times. I really couldn't hear that much similarity, and definitely not enough to make them "Commercial fakers."
OrnateFail 2 years ago 2
Very true! sometimes a certain rhythm or melody happens to work for two or more different songs, and the two songs don't really sound that similar... perhaps Coldplay was inspired by the tune, but they certainly didn't commit plagiarism...!
BxLxEx18 2 years ago
Hmm, I don't really hear it all that closely. And you are always going to have songs that sound similar. But really, in no way are they the same. They have different rhythms, tempo, meaning.
RachelleislikeWOAH 2 years ago 3
either viva la vida or foreigner suite, both are great songs, but I got suprised when viva la vida came out. they have enough brain to make something original, at least i thought that
