Two great actors, with some wonderful production values. Unfortunately the end result was a rather dull film. The love story was pure fiction, I would have loved it if the ceiling had been treated as a third protagonist and not just the convenient prop for Julius and Michalangelo's ego.
The last scene of the completed ceiling comes as an anitclimax.
Great film. Rich color. Classic Heston. If a remake was to come along, I'd love to see Daniel Day-Lewis as Michelangelo. Come to think of it, Mr. Lewis would arguably make an awesome Pope Julius.
@rmarcontell What I find sad is why his sexuality even matters REGARDLESS of what it was. He used his talents to glorify God THAT is worth talking about. I am not interested in thier bedroom activeity OR LACK OF.
@rmarcontell Well, that dosent exsplian how they knew if he was or wasnt gay. If he was chaste then they certainly couldnt know by what was happening in the bedroom because NOTHING WAS HAPPENING. Chaste means no sex regardless of what gender you like.
@rmarcontell If he was chaste that means he didnt have sex of any kind so the qustion is if he never had any sex how would we know what gender he was attracted to. They didnt have Talk shows and they didnt publicy talk about sex back then. I . I mean IF he was gay then he was gay but I dont see how we can actualy KNOW that. Art is what you decide to read into it.
This is a very good movie and it is also the truth .There are many people through out the ages have given there time and talents for our holy mother Church. Thank God the almighty that I am a Roman Catholic and I have the greatest love , respect , admiration for the roman pontif the holy Father .
Central to the ceiling decoration are nine scenes from the Book of Genesis of which the Creation of Adam is the best known, having an iconic standing equaled only by Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, the hands of God and Adam being reproduced in countless imitations.
The ceiling's various painted elements comprise part of a larger scheme of decoration within the Sistine Chapel which includes the large fresco of The Last Judgment on the sanctuary wall, also by Michelangelo, wall paintings by a team of the most highly regarded painters of the late 15th century including Botticelli and Perugino, and a set of large tapestries by Raphael, the whole illustrating much of the doctrine of the Catholic Church.
The Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, is one of the most renowned artworks of the High Renaissance. The ceiling is that of the large Sistine Chapel built within the Vatican by Pope Sixtus IV, begun in 1477 and finished by 1480. The chapel is the Papal Chapel within the Vatican, and is the location for Papal Conclaves and many important services.
Heston was the perfect Michelangelo. One of my all time fav. movies. I especially love the opening battle scene. sets the difficulties of the time perfectly.
I like how this video shows what the Sistine must have looked like before Buonarotti got his hands on it. Quite a difference between the ceiling painted sky blue with a few stars and how it is now.

Only a homo would think Michelangelo was a homo.
He was a great artist who left his mark on the artistic world. What have you done? Jackoff on your unemployment check?
