@scottmcw5050 It's not a fun rush. It was for the first part, and after (once we knew we survived). But at the height of the storm, even we as pros were thinking we went too far on this one, and the stomachs weren't feeling so well for a little bit.
@BryceDella Were you i S.MD. I was living in Maryland (having moved to florida and back in Maryland now) myself. The Hurricane Charley chase/intercept was a straight 30 hour adventure.
I was about three years old when I hit hurricane Charly in Florida. Ohh my mom tells me storys about that time that the ocean was all srained out... seaweed was on the sand... shuffle board was broken... the pool broke, (I don't know how,) We had to sit in the bathroom for about one hour or2. I'm not sure. That was back then, after the hurricane was over, we went to disney world for the day. I remember taking walks on the ocean, being spoiled, Ohh good times.. :( I miss those days..
Are you talking about a different Charley? Because this one went over Orlando. Disney wasn't open the next day as there was some damage. So I'm guessing it was a different Charley
@WeatherWarriordotnet At what point, if any, in the Charley chase, did you realize that the hurricane had rapidly strengthened to a strong Cat 4. storm? And was there any concern that the storm was continuing to strengthen in the last hours leading up to, and through, landfall?
@peakman2006 Pretty much as soon as the NOAA WX radio announced it and nearly at the same time some fellow chasers at their homes watching the hurricane hunters data output calling us on the cell phone.
There was a concern about it going stronger, but minor, we were already in disbelief it got as strong as it did so fast. At that point it was all about safety (where to station ourselves). This is the primary reason we did not go toward the beach...surge risk, structure were not reliable enough
im from the UK and it was my first time in America and i was in the hurricane too. I was ten at the time, and im fourteen now. I was in Orlando, and it wasn't too bad. but still, it built up fast and because I was young i crapped myself (not literally)
same i was staying at Orlando i was exicted because i had never whitnessed one before but when it all started i started getting shit scared but luckily the house that i was staying in wasn't damaged but houses around us had no pool screens and tiles on their roofs missing i was only 9 at the time and last summer i was there when tropical storm fay hit. tbh it was just like a wet and windy day in england so i was use to it cos that happens all the time :D
Living in Florida I've been through roughly 15. Let's just say the best part was no school for a few days, but the no electricity, running water, or going anywhere blows. Not to mention how humid it gets after one goes through. Not fun in the least bit.
yeah it gets too humid, the weather is also hot after one, the day after hurricane Charely i spent all day in the swimming pool just on a lilo staring at the houses that were wrecked and the sky. definatly not fun one bit
@theatrebully21 Thats a lot for one state...you must be on the older side, or had a horrible time of luck moving to different parts of the state and still getting hit by one. Maybe it was your job or something, or you are including tropical storms too. But you must have done it right...you survived.
@Tweedledeetoo Standard Chrysler/Jeep spec from factory. It was a rental. The hood took most of the brunt. Winds just inside the walkway/tunnel were decreased to around 70mph here (compared to gusts to 175mph just 20 feet ahead).....easily within spec.
wipers off!!! uhh what a waste!!! for such a beautiful cause!!!!!!! . I love hurricane chasers. Especially since im going to be one!!!!!!! or a tropical meteorologist.
@honorschild how you doing on that hurricane chaser bit? Like I told Zeater below, when you make it into a Cat. 4, than you can do whatever you want. We had more important things to deal with (like living)!
The noise steals the show. The wind noise was evil, it reminds me of the howling sounds of the video made inside the hotel in Puerto Rico during Hurricane Hugo.
@wannachase The noise was crazy in that storm. At this point, many of us just dove into our cars and hoped we lived. But during the first half of the eyewall, we were standing to the left of this shot, taping the craziness, and trying to get some of the audio
@menicknick Not when you consider that we put a great documentary together, won an award for that documentary and somehow managed to make a lot of money. I got to live on South Beach for four months as a beach bum!
Sorry but We Dealt with Andrew in homestead in an older home my wife was raised in. I thought it was our last hour of living.
I don't want to sound crazy but WE NOT I but we herd LAUGHING. LOUD AND CLEAR.
