  • This is an amazing scene. Kenny Garrett is one of my favorite musicians ever, and the interplay with Taral Hicks and Dan Rous in this is just gorgeous.

  • This is why I became a producer. My mind was made up when I heard this late one night when I was supposed to be in bed.

I saw it back when i was in jr high and i have been trying to find it.

  • absolutely beautiful. i saw this as a child and remembered it later when my mother passed. i cry when i watch it but its so beautiful that i actually feel good about crying.

  • My mother has been resting in peace since 1990, and I fall apart every time I have heard/seen this performance. Beautiful and thanks for posting. It is exactly how I always feel...

  • her riffs are bananas and her range is remarkable. I love her voice. Watchin Bronx Tale now and when I saw her on the bus it made me look for this clip. I would love for her to get back to mainstream! Record labels wake up!

  • Yo this movie gave me emotions right on this part. Salty water came out my eyes like mad, and since then I can feel something. :P Not sure what it is though.

  • this song moves me to tears. shes so beautiful

  • been lookin for this for longest love this clip.....

  • OMG, I have been looking for this for years and I am just now finding it. I seen this years ago!!! I love this scene!

  • seeing this years later makes me think a couple things

    1. i wanna give her a hug and let her know it'll be okay

    2. dont press your head against that nasty phone booth, babygirl

    Powerful scene

  • see taral hicks in video "think of you" by usher raymod and see her in movie "belly" yall can see me in movie trailor "AND THEN CAME LOVE" i'm wearing a beige sweater&blue jeans i'm dancing in the club.

  • EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Since my mother's passing there are songs I avoid:

    Brandy's "Have You Ever?"

    BOys to Men "Mama"

    Whitney's "I Love the Lord"

And this song by Taral HIcks.

This music; these sounds break me in two. Sometimes it does not feel as though I will ever feel whole again.

Excellent talent. Wasted. Where is she?

  • LOG ONTO SUBWAY STORIES "I'M GOING HOME" SEE TYRAL HICKS,AND SEE ROSARIO DAWSON AT THE START OF THE FILM ON THE TRAIN.

  • *cries like a baby* Taral Hicks, you have a Beautiful Soul <333

  • When she sings I get chills and I cry like a baby

  • @MissLibraLady ~~~~>I thought it was me but this song has the same effect on me too;I swear. This song has so much meaning I can't say it enough

  • I love this video! I've been looking for this since I was 17yrs old over 10 years ago! This spoke to my soul when I first saw it and still now! AMEN!!!

  • Always loved this scene. Taral Hicks is simply amazing.

  • @V4Voice loved it since it first aired

  • I was young watching TV in the middle of the night and after this girl sang and I was crying and understood my calling. the emotion behind her voice was very powerful!

  • Very compelling story. You feel for that poor girl, even when she leaves and even when we see what she left behind in the subway (scarf and flowers). It's also obviously proven from how those three girls quietly listen in too. "Subway Stories" is out on DVD for less than $10. I'm gonna buy it. These are stories worth remembering if I were to ever move out of New York.

  • what is the name of old man 'S song

  • ohhhh i mite be young but i can still reconize tallent (the woman)

  • i cannot believe i found this clip, i watched the movie more than 7 years ago and this scene is just great and unforgettable for me

  • I'm so surprised HBO didn't continue this one time show of true stories from the subway. The lead singer - Detria Hicks was outstanding in her performance..

  • Still gives me chills.. She killed this! Man I miss my mom .... :'(

  • beautiful song

she sang so gud. got me in tears

  • what the name is last song of the man saying

  • OOH WEE THIS SONG JUST MOVES ME AND MAKES ME THINK OF MY MOM.

  • love this song. I sang it at my Grammie's memorial this past friday. miss u Grams

  • I remember a movie called "Subway Stories" that included 7-8 short stories including this clip here, way back in 1997 or so. When i first saw it i was very moved and watched it 4-5 times.Upon remembering it, and finding this video, i was moved again. Absolutly beautiful performance. Thank you for uploading this! Without it i might have never gotten to see it again. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  • Wow, Church Ave. That figures though...

  • as funny as it sounds... I couldn't stop... I ran to my laptop and found this video sitting in my favorites list and i cranked it up as loud as I could and sobbed. She has an amazing voice and did an amazing job of this cover...

  • My partner of 3yrs, woke up a few mornings ago and told me he was never really in love with me.. even after all we endured. my mom was diagnosed with cancer 2 times now, and i just recently lost my job... as I sit here... with all of the emotions flowing through me like some venomous poison... I weep.. and as I wept, I could not for the life of me stop thinking of this song. I contemplated many things... searching for answers spiritually. and all I wanted....... "was to see my mother"

  • @NurseGonzalez So sorry about your pain and suffering. Sending healing thoughts and blessings your way.

  • she shook my soul with this one. Very underrated actress and singer.

  • who is she?

  • @rannedwards Taral Hicks and there are no words for this performance.

  • love it love it love it. taral hicks did such a great job in this film. i can't tell you how many times i caught the train at that same church ave station and it has never been the same after viewig this clip. MARVELOUS

  • what a movie

  • I fell in love with Taral after this... So much soul!!!! Amazing. Go on girl, from one sistah to another!!!

  • Why is this song not on itunes? :(

  • Try Mahalia Jackson trouble of the world... maybe you(ll find it.

  • Thanks for that Mickael but would love to have Taral Hicks singing it instead! :)

  • WOW

  • I also visit from time to time to listen to a real singer!

  • Someone please help me find this on video. It stirs my soul.

  • I have it on at home on DVD also on hard disk on my computeur....in english but live in france

  • such a beautiful scene

  • This particular has stayed with me since it's broadcast. It shows what being "in-touch" really means.

I visit it from time to time.

  • I love this. I wish hbo still showed it. I'm going to see if i can find it on amazon. Good Stuff.

  • OMG I remember this movie when I was a kid too. I love that... seeing old movies that I haven't seen for like ten years. I love this movie, I'm going to look for it.

  • OMG I remember seeing this when i was a little boy and I was like dang she sanging

  • I still have this movie on VHS...it was the only way I could find it!

This short solidified my choice to dedicate my life to music. Taral Hicks' voice and the Cantor..............

No matter the background music moves.................

  • Ive been looking on the internet for this clip for years. I remember when I saw this my mother was in the hospital and it touched me so much

  • been look 4 this fa yrs

  • Kenny Garret is sooooo good much love

  • I so wish this performance was available as an mp3 file.

  • She sung this song.when i heard her singing this it hit me like a blow to the chest i had to sit down.even now all these years later it still hits me hard.

  • I saw this when it aired on HBO many years, my sister and I loved it. My mom still has it on VHS, she recorded it back then. I loved the whole thing but this was the best scene in the film. Taral Hicks gave me chills, she sang so beautifully.

  • Do you still have it on tape??? Please, please, please upload it on youtube! I especially liked the episodes with Steve Zahn as an investment broker who chats it up with Ben Stiller's dad on new investment opportunites.

  • But the ones that really moved me was the woman who put her dog in a kennel, came to nyc, and got stuck in the subway all by herself at night. She cried and vowed never to put her dog in a kennel ever again.

  • The other had Richard Pryor, I think, and as he was waiting for the train, he saw a suspicious woman on the opposite platform. She was crying, then took her jacket and shoes off, and was preparing to throw herself into an oncoming train. All he could kept doing was tell her, "Miss, step back! Don't do it!" At the last possible moment, before she could leap in front of the train, a man (presumably her husband) came running down the stairs yelling, "Priscella, wait!"

  • After grabbing her, he talked to her as the train went past, and the man watched as her husband hugged her. He picked up her jacket, put it on her, and they walked out of the subway. He fell apart and cried because he was about to see someone end their live and he wasn't able to do much about it. He also cried because he felt so sad that something really bad must've happened to a really nice person in order to drive themself to suicide.

  • And he cried because he felt rejoiced that somebody who loved came down and saved her life. A few minutes later, his train arrived, he wiped away his tears, and got on.

  • The clips were "The 5:24" with Steve Zahn and Jerry Stiller, "Ferri's Heart of Darkness," and "The Manhattan Miracle." In "The Mahattan Miracle," the woman was Anne Heche and the guy trying to stop her from killing herself was Gregory Hines, not Richard Pryor. My bad.

  • @poponlychild OMG I remember this scene very well and I also remembered seeing this on HBO and this still gives me chills!

  • @poponlychild I agree. I saw it back then and admit, I had never heard this song before. My mom told me that it was originally done by Mahalia Jackson and was in Imitation of Life...loved it ever since. But this version will always be very special to me. She has an amazing voice.

  • My god, that was beautiful.

  • Saw this a long time ago. Was thinking of my dad who I lost several years ago. I guess I'm not the only one but this song and her performance of it just brings something out in your soul. I would like to ask her what was on her mind when she did that scene.

  • damn.

did those girls feel shamed enough to go back to the old man and return the stuff they stole?

  • haha nope!

  • Man thats beautiful

  • Thank you so much, Ms. Dash, for making this available. I remember the first time I saw it. It moved me to tears, it was so beautiful. Happy to see it again after all this time.

  • Powerful, beautiful, makes me cry... Subway Stories is a strong patchwork quilt of the spirit of the NYC underground--the beautiful and the ugly.

  • heartwrenching stuff

  • wtf...i thought this was bout paintin freights...wtf

  • This song has always brought tears to my eyes. Such a moving song. I love the way she sings, I wish I could sing like this.

  • Damn yall i could feel the tears gettin ready to fall from my face. I always said she could sing her ass off!! Taral Hicks another great singer and actress who just doens't get her proper due!

  • she sangin her hiney off

  • Her Sister D'Atra Hicks, is a powerful vocalist, and her gospel screams are held for over two minutes at a time, they both grew up here in NY and if you think she is something, wait til' you see D'Atra Hicks. Voices like that run in the family.

  • Everytime i watch this , it brings me to tears

  • my sister died March 10th, 2009, 27 yrs old., my heart is so heavy, i wish i could stop crying.

  • Tepher 208, I was just having a snack. graham cookies, yogurt and lemon-ice tea, next thing I knew, tears are rolling down my face............My mom died in Chicago. She went to live with my sister hoping for better times, she got worse. She decided to come, I packed her clothes prepared to ship them out the next week, she died that Thursday. Safiya didn't call to tell me she'd be in the hospital 4 days already!!!! My mom was my "eldest sister", she raised me from age 1. I'll always miss her.

  • this is my favorite scene in the whole movie...just truly amazing!

  • oh my goodness i forgot about this!!!

  • Can someone upload the rosie perez scene please.

  • Julie Dash is a good director but "Love Song" is a supreme embarrasment. It was a total sellout and made for all the wrong reasons and totally unwatchable for a myriad of reasons...

  • I can never watch this without crying, she has such a powerful voice filled with emotion that it gets me every time.

  • same here

  • great voice but she is not longer singing into the phone to her mother.

  • that's because in the course of her singing her mother dies... ''i want to see to see my mother... i'm going home to live with god'' it's a sad song, but i love it through and through

  • Her singing of that song, will stop anybody in their tracks. Luv It

  • the greatest bit of singing ive ever heard, without a doubt! i saw this at like 3am on tv like 6 years ago and have never seen it again till now.

  • Great!

  • I have searched everywhere to watch this again. the whole movie. I remember seeing this when it came out and just sobbing from the heart, I hugged my mother a little tighter that day, and it renewed a sense of urgency in me, that our time here is so short. Best not to waste that time.

  • it's amazing that someone with this much talent doesn't sell records like some people with little to no talent like mary j blige.

  • Absolutely incredible!!!!

  • O wow...chills!

  • Thats Singing From Your SOUL!!! AWESOME!!

  • When I saw this I became an instant fan. I got her cd also even though it didn't do well. I hope she comes back out.

  • One of the best voices of our generation...Taral is music royalty!

  • this is the most amazing scene. the way everyone stops what they are doing. how her pain permeates throughout the station. It hurts and inspires at the same time.

  • I remember I saw this too when it first came out, and she had me feeling like I was losing my father all over again. Id been trying to tell people about it especially when Belly came out and they had NO IDEA what I was talking about...I felt crazy like I was the only person to have seen it, then never again. I love you for posting this...I still get goose bumps and tearyed..Oh, I want to see, to see my Father! I want , I want to See......Sing It Taral.....!

  • a brilliant example of the power music has to transcend the limitations of words and cultural differences

  • its kenny garett

  • what in the world happened to her, i remember silly and then she just like disappeared

  • i was 13 when i first saw this ....im now 27....been looking ever since

  • Taral Hicks can BLOW!!! She is really talented....such a shame that chicks like Cassie can blow up and not her

  • I didn't know this was on here. The song that the Jewish man sings, is that the same song that the girl sings?

  • Wow I am amazed

  • powerful.

  • 2:47 She kills it!
