I love her. She's definitely sweet and pretty. But as I bike commuter myself, I long for the day when this is a non-story, let along describing it as extreme.
i wish my girl would be abit more enthusiastic about riding a bike.. if only shed see more women do it im sure shed see the logic behind it... cycling saves money helps you get in shape and its a fun activity to do with your bf so to all women out there please RIDE A BIKE!!! or skate etc or both
Amazing all the fear mongering from people saying "wear a helmet".
I also love the claims of "a helmet saved me". The average commuter DOES NOT need to wear a plastic bucket on their head.
I've fallen off many times and haven't even come close to hitting my head. I have however come close to smacking my head on the pavement when I slipped on ice while walking in the winter...Helmets for pedestrians perhaps? Maybe motorists as well. Hell everyone should wear one at all times maybe.
Extreme commuter? Extreme muppet - RLJ without even looking!! Top stuff, godd job she knows some form of First Aid as she'll need it pretty soon judging by that riding!
I wouldn't care so much about the red-light running thing if she actually LOOKED before proceeding through... I rarely run red lights (i only go when I can't see a single car in the cross traffic, which basically never happens), but when I do, I come to a full stop and clearly look both ways before going.
I'm sorry to say that Julia's days are numbered unless she adopts safer biking practices. Lane splitting, running reds, no helmet, passing on left, no lights, no reflectors, traveling in danger zone of opening car doors, not signaling. There's a way to bike in safely in Manhattan and this is not it.
Lights help where drivers are polite. Not sure about NY, but in Boston, "if cars can't see you, they can't aim for you" ;) Obeying traffic laws helps a lot. Reflectors help a tiny bit. Being doored sucks. But I know of no credible evidence that helmets do any good--the studies that "proved" that have been thoroughly discredited. Stop repeating urban myths.
Keep riding, Julia! If more people did like us urban cyclists cities would be safer and cleaner places to live. I don't think she rides agressively but very consciuosly and wisely (she's quite experienced by now, isn't she?). And helmets must remain optional!
she's never scared? then she is road kill rolling.
It's one thing being timid and letting cars agressively dominate the space it's quite another not being aware that a motorist distracted could kill you at any moment. I was scared watching her run those red lights :)
lane splitting, running red lights, no helmet. thats extreme allright - extremely stupid.
i love how there is this assumption of 'judgement' - she is embarassed that she "took the subway" after almost dying on snowpacked roads. listen lady, nobody cares if you take the subway, its not considered 'evil', millions of "oppressed minorities" do it every day in poverty stricken third world cities like tokyo
Hardly extreme, my dad rode year 'round into his mid 60's, in a city that has much longer, colder and snowier winters than New York.
Admirable yes, but if senior citizens can do it in a harsher environment, it's certainly not extreme for someone in thier twenties

Yeah sure. The lack of helmet is what makes it unsafe.
