"How is this possible? How did this happen? It's like you guys hard-wired my brain! That's what I saw when I was writing that story. I don't understand this. How can this happen!?
Judging from the comments, CG is underappreciated around here. Alot of times, CGI is so convincing that you don't even know it's there. The problem is that people think CG sucks since they can only see it when it's done poorly.
They only need CGI for things that require them, not everything. They managed to do King Kong in the 1930s just fine. And it's one of the most memorable films of all time due to it's effects. Sure it was stop motion, but with today's effects you could do Stop Motion and animatronics, and use CGI for only a few things. It still works, you never knew it was stop motion because you never had anything else.
This movie holds up so well over the years! CGI is overrated... miniatures and puppets (like the original Jim Henson Yoda from Empire and Pilot and Rygel from Farscape....they seem more real than CGI characers.)
Extraordinary achievement. I think the two shots of the blimp, especially the closer shot, are my favorite shots of the whole film. Looks almost 3-D at times.
I work with miniatures and practicals (models) in special effects and CG is great for complimenting practicals. Star Trek was all CG and looked good, but in a surreal sort of way. Starship Troopers was a classic example of using both: CG and practicals.
This is beautiful! Magical, but the Vangelis adds so much as well.
So sad that the producers of today settle for such poor quality effects. CGI is a great tool, but miniatures read REAL. These shots are beautiful and are far superior to the painted CG of today.
Agreed. I think the best use of CG is when it is used sparingly and in conjunction with models. I'm not opposed to CG at all when it is used where real life can not be. I imagine what Dark Crystal would've been like if the skeksis had been cg - yuk. And the touch-ups on Star Wars just pissed me off. But I will say that the underwater sequence in the Phantom Penis (lol) was magical.
One of my all time favorites. Loved the days of great effects work done with good miniature techniques. I do appreciate CGI but there's a special magic with what was done with models when managed properly.
i am working as a electrician in Germany and may favourite film is BLADE RUNNER !!! I am looking fror peoples working on this masterpiece....so is there a chance to send some words to your father and of course get a autograph ????
I think Hollywood needs to revert back to the way they did special effects like the way they made these effects in Blade Runner. They used models and lights heavily and created in-camera effects which made the effects more tangible whereas if you go watch Spider-Man it is so easy to be distracted by the special effects becuase you know they're there.
This is one of the last movies that used in-camera effects, and of course much harder to produce which is why there are so many/few in Blade Runner, depending on your point of view.
I know. It's sad. Tangible effects make movies so much more realistic and so you really experience that magic that older movies are so good at creating. Just imagine Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Had the ships and aliens been CGi the magic would've been gone.
This is why I was never impressed with 5th Element. I saw Blade Runner when I was 9. So been there done that. But you younger generation who never saw BR. Thought, wow how original 5th element was, lol!
I have to disagree. I've been a BR fan since its incept, but I also love the 5th. Sure, there are many similarities, but enough differences to enjoy them as 2 different movies. I kind of look at the 5th as a "tribute" sort of film, also. Just relax and allow yourself to like things for what they are, don't be so critical.
Excellent choice and the letterbox and I think slightly downsized from that ? Anyway, great because then it looks really good in YouTube full-screen mode. Well done.
Gorgeous! I planned to do something similar, only my Vangelis choice would have been Blade Runner Blues; I absolutely love that spacey, echoey, lonely synth.

This stuff is great, should be done more in modern films, even when miniature stuff isn't always convincing, at least I can always tell it's real.
Pure cgi always looks so fake, like in the Star Wars films, meh.
One of the main giveaways is always how blurry cgi looks due to the fake shading and lighting.

Perhaps I'm missing the point, but can someone explain to me how CGI is supposed to be better than this....?

Still amazing after all these years. Needs to be seen on the big/wide silver screen again!

Fantastic. One of the great "classic" (non CGI) achievements of cinema. Beautifully done.

This and 2001 A Space Odyssey are by far the greatest Sci-Fi pictures ever.

Not only are they great, I think they define what Sci-Fi movies really SHOULD be. Both directors where outstanding too.

my father, David Dryer, was the head of the team that did those shots, hes in the credits, like 4th or 5th full screen credit look for him!

These scenes sorta remind me of the scenes in the beginning of Star Wars Attack of the Clones, maybe they got the idea for those shots from this.
