Shane Antaya (The Pilot killed), steered his plane as best he could to stay away from the crowd. He never ejected. Dan Dempsey was fortunate enough to be able to eject. I remember some people at the time criticizing Dempsey for ejecting but considering noone was in the path of his plane when he ejected what should he have done? The only bright side is that no civillians lost their lives as a result. RIP.
@jacseg23 did you actually work forth snowbirds? I'm looking into getting a job with airshow jets like the snowbirds or the Blue Angels. Just saw the snowbirds today :) great show
this was 1989 Capt. Shawn and Antaya crashed in Lake Ontario after touching the wingtip of Snowbirds 1 Maj. Dan Dempsey. Dempsey survived is only comment when he reached the hospital was somebody give me some clothing.
Shane is missed by all but that's our job this is what we do and ask any Snowbird pilot if every other chance to meet them they would not want to do anything else in the world.
I believe that you may have found a piece of canape which is a hors d'œuvre in your backyard but when it comes to a Canope forget it. None of the crash of the snowbirds happened in building areas I understand that you may be fascinated by airshows, but don't make up stories to be important. I worked long enough for the snowbirds since 1971 when we put the first thing together to know every single crash and I met most of the crew over the years. So have a good life
I was fortunate enough to not be there to witness the snowbirds crash. I was going the day after but it got cancelled. I was horrified when I find out. I did however witness the Nimrod crash. The pilots were at sick kids the day before. I spoke to them for a bit. To this day I can still remember the thud as it hit the water. I know people have a fascination with air disasters but being there, it's a terrible feeling. You knoe sevral good people lost their lives. It was a sad day.
@00Billy Aspirating Nimrod that crashed in Lake Ontario in fact that is not known is the pilot flying that aircraft and was told by reliable source that formed briefing that morning in Toronto Pearson airport said you're going to see something that you will never forget. To this day I'm not quite sure what he meant some of those pilots and met so many of them are hot dog.pilots they love to push the edge. I'm convinced that he did not do that intentionally however the result was a catastrophe.
major dempsey tried to pass blame on a dead pilot. he in fact caused the crash by steering into antaya's starboard wingtip. pilot error on the part of the commander who is supposed to call the ball on all manouvres. he was dishonourably discharged from the canadian armed forces years later on a separate incident. what an asshole..
How could you possibly comment about this event without providing proof to back it up?
Yes, you are entitled to your opinion, but unless you were there as a member of the team at that show site, how could you possibly know what had happened, or, for that matter, know how Maj Dempsey retired from the CF later on down the road?
I agree, these are very serious accusations. I follow the Snowbirds extensivley. Dan Dempsey is a good friend and have never heard any thing to back your claim. Speaking your mind is one thing, but to make accusations about a great Canadian pilot with out posting any information to back up your comment, is another. I challenge you to provide resources to prove your claim or remove your comment. By the way, Lt. Col Dempsey is now training Capt. for Cathay Pacific Air Lines on the Boeing 777.
I know for a fact that Lt. Col. Dempsey was not the cause of this incident. He was also discharged from the military with full honors and if you don't believe me call DND and get your facts straight!!
Un like your I don't post in accurate imformation heard at the water cooler.
I was there! I was 14 when this happen. I snapped away with my little camera when Shane Antaya and Dan Dempsey collided. Antaya's plane went into Lake Ontario. Then Dan Dempsey's plane exploding and him ejecting.
some people say he didnt eject because there were boats in the water and he steered his plane down, to protect the lives of others. some say he is a hero :o
They have very, very old ejection seats, they are useless at low altitudes (<1000 ft) and with sinkrates (plane dropping, ie: negative vertical speed component).
Oh, and the commentary is in Russian, not freaking Polish.
I was at that show.Major Dan Dempsey did eject however Shane didn't for some reason ,,Investigators did factor in that perhaps Shane Antaya sneezed which could of caused crash. It was a "upwards / down maneavour " they were doing. The ironic thing about this tragedy is that Antaya's father died in the same fashion.
This crash didn't happen in 1991, but on Sept. 3 1989. Capt. Shane Antaya, Snowbirds#2died when his aircraft(114098) collided with his lead's following the split on the upward-downward bomb burst.
It went into lake ontario, look at my profile, I have another airshow crash there that happend in 1995 where a nimrod crashed into lake ontario. I was there when it happend. Everyone in the plane died.
Devastating!

This was a 'reverse star burst ' where two planes clipped.... if I remember correctly...
yes I believe the upward travelling plane did wait and insured a safe area for the plane - away from boats -before ejecting.
The downward travelling plane didn't have a chance.....
I was in the air show VIP section... I remember the sound the most....
I witnessed the Nimrod crash too. From a boat.

Actually the Snowbirds are based out of CFB Moose Jaw.

CFB Moose Jaw is the home base of the Snowbirds not Trenton. CTB Trenton is the home base of the 8 wing, transport units.
