Jacques Vallée was the inspiration for Monsieur Lacombe in "Close Encounters," and a consultant on the film. He's long been a proponent of the Extradimensional Hypothesis, not the Extraterrestrial, and he asked Steven Spielberg why he was strongly implying that his visitors came from another solar system.
