i litterally just got done reading the book (took me 6 hours, couldn't put it down) and that's not how it ended :/ i prefer the ending in the book just because, he's crying in his fathers arms..
I was 15 and saw this with my high school sweetheart. We went our separate ways two years later, but I think I took away from this film a lesson about what really matters in a marriage. I eventually married my best friend, and in 32 years we have rarely had to say 'I'm sorry'. I hope my first love found happiness too.
What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died? That she was beautiful and brilliant? That she loved Mozart and Bach, the Beatles, and me? ~Oliver Barrett IV
@maskedavenger777 I swear its not bullshit.I also did not understand it until last month.I only realize the meaning of this today.he is not saying about common fights in couples. It means that, when you really love someone, you'd never do anything that break the trust or the respect between the couple.you wont dare to cross that field. When someone do something that collapse your trust or respect and dont care about the consequence, its time to move on to other relationship.Sorry for mistakes
the dislike button if for the ending. He should of died with her. Taken a bottle of pills and lay there next to her so they could die together. The Shakespeare they should of recalled was Romeo and Juliet.
Oliver tried hittin pop's up for some bread to pay for her treatment and he thought it was fo abortion. One of the only flicks where theatre goers walked oup at end red eyed and somber in an almost erie silence. Kleenex stock shot through the roof during this 1970 movie run.
This is a gift, a thing of beauty to be shared by those with the soul and heart to
appreciate the skills of those who wrote, who had the skils to put the hundreds and thousands of pieces together in such a way. Applaude them they deserve i t . maxthevid.
This movie was made about 17 years before I was born but I liked it alot when I watch it for the first time a view years ago. I cried like a baby, I dont ever cry at things. I was like does love like that actually exist?
i have watched this movie and I really cried at the end. Though I was born on 1988, and only watched this last year [2010], the movie seems to be for all generations...
first ever world wide metal cover of LOVE STORY by DEADLY LIGHTNING.....come in aiasmusic - DEADLY LIGHTNING channel and hear the metal version of an epic...thanks AIAS.
@annib00 Most likely not, because if you're poor you STILL can't really get access to the best medical care! You notice there at the end when the guy's father showed up offering "help?" In other words, specialists and treatment. This story still holds up in today's world and it's just as poignant as ever!
This movie kills me every time I see him on I can not stop crying. It makes me remember the day I've seen the movies and the movie ended I saw everybody was silent cry, it's been almost 40 years ago. I will not forget this ''Love Means Never Having to Say You're Sorry" Sorry everybody now I cry again...
I would truly love to see this whole movie again. I was 10 when it came out and living on Cape Cod, which is south of Boston/Cambridge (site of story) some 60 miles. I just sat here and cried again, 40 years later, watching this part. That book title "Love Story" was iconic in shape, color, with tilted O's throughout that era, and many dog-eared copies were passed around amongst friends who, like me, read it. What a beautiful movie.
I know what the line meant..I lived at roughly the same time and age, melanoma,,lived the film,,, strangely we looked alot like them,,,, I still miss her..RWB

I think that the look in Ryan O'Neal's face when he says that line explains it all. The hurt in his eyes show that part of that line means that you should do all that you can to never hurt those that you love, so that you're never in the position to say that you're sorry. But his face also shows that if you truly love someone very much and you know that they love you, you should not pain yourself by saying that you're sorry. Their love has already forgiven you.
1970 ?? Wow, 40 years ago ?? I was only seven, but I remember my older sisters watching it and crying. The last scene is hard to forget, the backdrop is perfect for the movie...a gloomy day, no people around, him sitting there completely alone. A true classic and a sad one too.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I got to see this at the theatre when it came out in 1970. But I've never read the book. I just ordered it. I hope the book was just as good as the movie.

@loukywmn Well... on the other hand: if you hurt someone you love, you should say sorry, shouldn't you? I think Lisa Simpson is right about this line... ;) But I like the movie. :)
@RandomCoolNick I saw the movie when it came out and the line doesn't mean 'sorry' as in apologizing. It means never saying you are sorry for the experience of love...with all its ups and downs.
@blkchk WOW...How did you figure that out? Because I never would have gotten that from the line and the context of the scene...but it makes sense. Thanks
@Born2bRedeemed This movie was talked about ad nauseum when it came out. I always understood it to mean that and it makes sense in the context of the movie. If you loved someone you knew was going to die, would you stop loving that person? Or would you make every moment count? And, in looking back, would you say you were sorry for the experience? That's the theme of the movie.
@blkchk Oh, ok. The way it was explained to me was that if you love someone, truly love someone, and you hurt them, you know that you are forgiven, even before you say you're sorry. That is true love....knowing that you are forgiven even before saying you're sorry. That's how I took it.
