Bascially his point is that to make people useful and obedient, you can't terrorize and annoy them as the Soviet regime did, you should unearth their inner passions and fears and use them to fuel your projects. You can't exploit your slave if you don't know it, just like you can't ride on human backs or have a horse build walls. So the whole culture of venting your feelings and and satisfying your needs is really just a way to exploit people to the fullest. Good point.
Bernays: Father of the Big Fat Lying Pigs for the shysters & business criminals.
Freud: A demented freak who ISN'T taken seriously by doctors (I am one, so I know), but those who have little training (so-called "therapists" & "counselors" like to hang their grossly undertrained hats on the likes of him).
I need to learn psychology and become has educated as I can in the teachings of the mind/personality,seems like humanity as a whole needs a shrink, rather then every person had individual!
Sigmund's work was purposely mis-translated, in a such a way that it's spiritual meaning got lost. They (the American behaviorist psychopaths) avenged him because he wrote America off as a 'sick and disgusting' country. He wasn't atheist either, he was, like any sane human being against these parasitical institutions who work under the banner of religion. If you're capable of reading German, read his works in that language. It's recommended. ;-)
This 6-part series is really only 1/4 of the entire documentary. I highly recommend watching the entire film, as it explains many of the things that are not clear or are hard to swallow in this film.
I watched this entire film 2 yrs ago. it takes a very selective view of history. Very selective. There's a faint whiff of anti-semetisim and a distinct anti-free market tone. Leftists and Marxists will love it. Everyone else will find it slow moving and will struggle to see it through.
@gdsila It may seem to be selective in its view of history but the reason why is that the other parts of history ARE told in history books... where this side of history is NOT. The point of a documentary is often to shed light on things that are in the dark. Just because it goes against what you've been sold doesn't make it leftist. By the way, just because someone points out something that could be construed as negative about someone who happens to be Jewish does NOT make it anti-Semitic!
Freud was a innovator. But the science of the human mind has moved on.
People still quote Freud as if his ideas are up to date.Of course they have been improved and modified.
Good modern therapy includes brief analysis.CBT,NLP.Combining all the techniques in a quicker and more efficient way.Instead of spending years in therapy. But yet so many so called intellectual psychoanalysts use Feuds old long and drawn out methodology.I felt I just had to share this.
Thanks to this brilliant documentary, I am now fully aware that since the early 20th century, Big business cartels in America and around the world have colluded with money grubbing politicians and the corporate you are thirsty owned media in order to perpetuate illegal psychological warfare drink Coca Cola on the populace--which has led to the immoral and selfish consumerist society we live in today.
« During WWI, Bernays was part of the U.S. Committee on Public Information, a powerful orginisation that advertised and sold the war to the American people. The CPI was the blueprint in which marketing strategies for future wars would be based upon.» Bernays launched a propaganda myth known as "The Corpse Factory" accusing the Germans of turning dead soldiers into fats and soap.
Almost 30 yrs later, the Nurnberg tribunals happened to be organized by Bernays' brother-in-law, Murray Bernays.
This is so incredible. The depth of information here is just phenomonal and people should see this to determine how they have been, are and continue to be expolited and manipulated by the media, government and bigggggg business.
Enrico Caruso's voice is fantastic. Unfortunately every thinking person already understands all that this documentary is telling us and watches in dismay as their fellows buy into propaganda and spread it even further. Take the nicely shortened catch-cry of 9/11. Watch the crowds outside the White House celebrating Bin Laden's "death". Masses of people buy into anything that they're told by people who can't be trusted.
Scary how proud Mr. Bernays appears in his interviews. Notice that he's fat and bloated and scaling, like a tick or reptile, he's surrounded with food and drink, peering over it as if a child in a pile of toys, attemptting in vain to stuff himself with more, more, MORE..... Quintessential materialist! Made me shiver.
An excellent companion to this film would be the book, "The Ego Boom: Why The World Really Does Revolve Around YOU" by Maich & George ('09). Their look at marketing techniques are especially interesting. Highly recommended - check it out! Respects :)
@deadkraz Ironic kraz. It is sad but true. I mean, Gullible is really what most Americans are. Especially if you are 16 to say 30. They know nothing of politics, religion or science and they don't care. They want Idol or Lost or some sort of "favorite t.v. show" I tell you something. We better learn some history because it's going to repeat itself.
@lebiew Simple americans are perpentual children through their entire lives. You just have only to see, how they dress and how they behave. In land of infantilism guess who are the kings?
It's amazing how people are so easily influenced to the point that they spend their hard earned money based on emotions. "Sorry Kids, I'm not saving for your college tuition because if I don't buy the latest cell phone, clothes & car I'll feel like less of a "cool kid" in front of the neighbors & people at work ." I see this kind of mentality all the time, this is the mentality that trendy stores & malls rely on.
the whole system is here to make you pay and "consume"...you mention the fact that we take a sense of pride in our belongings but also i'd like to add that the system forces us to consume and stay enslave ..
@BagoGarde I guess that's my point, kids shouldn't have 2B strapped down w/ loans when a parent could have maybe had a few less toys & saved more.I know a 45 yr old man who's 17yr old daughter is riding a dangerous bus2 get 2college & he says he can't help her w/ a car /books & yet he just bought a $400 kinect system. He has spent the last 2days posting pics of his new toy on facebook & is getting all sorts of ego stroking from his friends for having it as if it increases his self worth-it's sad
@supermrbastian I grew up in a middle class no more than $70,000 a year household. My parents, who only have basic high school educations, were able to buy all kinds of toys from cars to luxury renovations through out their lives. Thanks to my parents worthless investments, which they hardley use and still say it was done for their children, my sibilings and I were forced to drop out of college just so we can survive. Now I am 29 unemployed and still considered spoiled by our older generations.
... great great series. essential for everyone to gain a bigger understanding, a more clear perspective of how our current world has been organized and why we seem to fail at social equality...& seeing the term: product of our environment in it's true light...
Minute 7:10 +/-, Making the world safe for democracy, sounds vaguely familiar. A New World in which the individual is free. Yes, I recall now, King Georgie, the guy who, with the United States Congress, removed habeas corpus and posse comitatus from the American landscape. I remember now, go on. Yes, Minute 8:20, Council on Public Relations, manipulating minds:: on 911 the WTC "collapsed", at freefall speed, on its own... Planes melted into buildings. People believe this today.
My first viewing of The Century of Self some years ago clearly marks a turning point in my understanding of the world and how it truly operates. I have learned so much since then. No one can take our liberty without us allowing it.
@ALUCA6R6 "Hey everybody! Let's make robots do all the labor and get rid of the money! Then the masses will become completely useless and have no reason to be kept alive by the elites anymore!"
@ALUCA6R6 As much as i liked those films I am lead to believe they are propaganda if you read the ultimate solution of the zeitgiest handbook the solution they provide is us giving out society over to a supercomputer and it would dictate every facet of our lives lol. Also they support the venus (venus=lucifer etc) project. The only solutions we really need is global non compliance to this fictional system. and we need to realize what reality truly is.
@inhalejesus It's not that it's full of lies,it's just lacks allot of perception and they ignore some problems while growing another.
The truth is,to create a utopia you must first know that humans are not "good by nature",while the entire "shaped by location" is nice and such, they forget that a kid held too much will crave for touch his entire life, and might become a rapist.-the thing is,Organic life is shaped by EVERYTHING,therefor going to focus on 1 thing does not really work.Utopia=dreaming
Agree: The Century of the Self is an excellent documentary. I felt horrible when I first watched it, but it changed the way I see things. I was shocked to learn that Goebbels kept Bernays' book in his back pocket and based the nazi propaganda on its principles.
What would be the effect on people if they watched it? Do you think they'd want to wake up and face reality?
@whitadow Well, I believe that prolestizing this video through sharing actually isn't the route to go. That way would be highly reminiscent of the Jehovah'ss Witness technique, which nobody likes. People will say "Yeah. Great. Whatever. What a bunch of crazies". /// People will only be able to accept the truth, and accept it fully (the latter part is crucial) when they've come to be ready for it. They have to search for it themselves, individually and come to the truth, one by one.
@whitadow Diogenes of Sinope, the ancient Greek philosopher, once said "If you discourse on virtue and the people will pass in droves. But, if you whistle and dance the shimmy, you've got yourself an audience." /// The best way, I believe, to expound truth is through casual, friendly conversation. It's non threatening and the person will know you're being genuine. Or, maybe they won't accept it. But, to try to reach everyone all at once, will only lead to frustration. They'll pass right by you.
@whitadow I've never heard that before, but I'd say that's about right. But, sometimes, the truth seeker becomes the truth expounder. Only the timing has to be right. /// What's really sad about this dialogue we've been having is that we're discovering Edward Bernays was so brilliant with all his theories. These people know how the masses tick. These guysknow the vast majority of people don't and won't care about the important, core issues of mankind as long as they remain in blissful ignorance.
Yes, but there are insightful people in all facets of society, many like us using this knowledge to try to enlighten others. Bernays sold out his insight to manipulate society, but such mass persuasion could only be done if there is in existence an entity (whether a government or corporation) that has sufficient capital to implement a publicity campaign on such a mass scale. The corporations that Bernays represented had such advantages.
@radicalsquare You hit the nail right onthe head with that one. But, he was so right. His daughter said he always referred to people as dopes. And they really are. Look at the stories in the news right now: the Lindsay Lohan and Lebron James. Who cares? The dopes. This is why Sigmund Frued, it's said, despaired in the last few years of his life and became a recluse. The individual can chage, not the masses. It's quite sad. But, we can make the world better by making our individual selves better.
@radicalsquare But, change will only come when people awake in a mob mentality, like the French and American Revolutions and overthrow their opressors, who crave anonymity. Oh, what a day that would be. However, I'm not holding my breath.
@TenderTrap86 ...and the leaders of the people who have awoke through mob mentality will, once they have power, spread it equally among all like christmas candy similar to the utopias created by lenin. and mao and ho chi minh and pol pot and fidel castro. but those whose overthrow is based on God and the Bible, like the U.S., will only result in dictatorships for decades where millions are slaughtered
kancerzx, it goes much beyond consumerism. If you will watch the series and read the summary of luxstock on the right sidebar, you will see that "Bernays was convinced that this was more than just a way of selling consumer goods. It was a new political idea of how to control the masses." I believe that anyone who watches the entire series cannot help but be shocked and saddened to see how this manipulation defines our 2-party poolitical system, and why corporate America wants to keep us divided
cuts off a bit at the start, what else have you cut?

This is a good film, thanks for I have learned the origins of consumerism

kancerzx, it goes much beyond consumerism.
