It should be noted that although these shots were cut from the English version (which is fortunate for viewers with weak stomachs), the corpses of the gladiators were still shown, so at least the deaths were acknowledged.
Yep. This show was FAR more brutal and violent than we thought it was. In fact, this is nothing like the US translation that we've come to know back in the day.
They're names in the series, the creatures that the Galra Empire trains to kill, are called Deathblack Beastman.
In one episode, they find an entire planet of them with only one survivor, a female Beastman. She actually befriends Shorty (his nickname; Pidge of course in the English language dub/butchering of it), and she helps him before Hanerva (Hagger) sadly fatally wounds here. They're perverted and made more evil trhough her Occult Sceience.
Something that I like having in super robot shows. The reason why I liked Voltes V was because of these scenes and I wish I could see the Japanese version of Voltron too.
I was still thinking this is a wider scope of Voltes V's bloody scenes since here it involves more aliens.
Japanese can watch violent shows and yet There is no real life violence occuring over there...Or at least nothing too drastic that deserves public awareness..To the degree that happens here
Just a higher suicide rate. Anime is a vicarious manifestation of a less hedonistic society. Guns and violence are glorified in anime, yet Japan's crime rates are low with strict gun laws. Their anime and entertainment is more sexually graphic than a lot of US stuff, yet their population growth and birth rates are much lower. I don't mind violence, but if I saw Golion as a kid, I would have had nightmares. Some of Golion's other scenes make Saving Private Ryan look like a Disney movie.
A perfect example was Mortal Kombat II the development team had to incorporate Babalities and friendships just to appease the politicians and parents who deemed the game too violent and clearly such a game was meant to be played and enjoyed by an older audience... yet so appealing to the younger audience
There is real life violence... there is the Yakuza (Japanese mafia) and such. There are prolly a ton of unreported rapes too. Things from Japan and other countries don't often get sent to the USA or Canada for that matter.
They have some unique marketing equations. "Hey, I think this is too violent." "Eh, throw some blue mice in a mouse robot, that'll offset it." You could set up some nice murophobia cases with the association ;)
What sick crap. Glad I didn't have to grow up with that.

They should redub this show uncensored on Adult swim on cartoon network. Seeing stuff like this makes me feel cheated.
