I've been reading a few comments about how accurate this film actually is in its portrayal of marine life, and tom keogh's comments at the top. I always thought the beauty of this film was it deals with the day to day banal life of the military and juxtaposes that with the banality of killing in vietnam. R. Lee Ermey was even a drill sergent and came up with a few of the insults himself! I've no doubt its all exaggerated for effect, but generally I think the film rings true and is believeable.

But then the Army's probably a bit different from the Marines. I've always heard the Marine DIs were a bit harder on their recruits.

Dad wanted me to go into the Army, but I found the Navy more attractive. You know, travel the world, serve on a boat, that kind of thing.

They make real soldiers, this movie showed what marine boot camp was like, but they overdid it with him hitting his soldiers, they do pretty much everything but that. Private pile was an example that not everyone is cut out for the marines, it is very phycologically challenging as well as physical, but it's the ultimate achievement.

Pyle is an unwelcoming character in any patoon. During my basic training days in Singapore in 89, we had a couple of Plyes & got punished for thier booboo mistakes. The irony was that, just like Pyle de jelly doughnut saga, they werent making any effort to improve to get fitter or lose weight. FYI I was forcefully drafted for 2yrs & being paid peanuts for US$50pm & extra US$5 after I completed the Basic. Many would love to join the army cos besides that tough training they are reasonably paid

I joined the Marines in 1981 and my DI's were Vietnam vets. They "technically" weren't supposted to hit the recruits but there still was some slapping around at times. If someone needed a good slap down, the squad leaders and guide took care of it at night.

No one died in my platoon but one cut his wrists and another jumped out a 2-story building.

Boot camp was JUST like this movie ! Motivating !
