What you have to understand is that CDS's are junk, it's just a way to collect a great deal of money without really having to manage risk, because the creators at AIG never thought that a company like Lehman and Freddie were ever going to go under. What you have to understand is that our market is based on faith, if investors think that your system is broken they will pull all of their money out and there would be a crash of unheard proportions. When Paulson let Lehman crash that faith was lost and many institutions started to yank their money and we saw the largest decline since the great depression. I can write millions of these contracts and collect billions of dollars, but when the investment goes bad, i have contracted to pay on the losses. Greed at the end of the day caused this. With the lack of regulations and the easing of the Securites act of 33-34, unregulated investment banks and insurance companies acting like regulated banks and packaging trash that was AAA rated by the moody's and Fitch and S&P had many buying garbage and AIG was at the head. AiG had hundreds of billions in subprime mortgage backed securities that they sold and insured. This was illegal back in the mid nineties, by 2000 it was all good!

What you have to understand is that CDS's are junk, it's just a way to collect a great deal of money without really having to manage risk, because the creators at AIG never thought that a company like Lehman and Freddie were ever going to go under. This is like me collecting a premium from you saying that "the moon might fall from the sky so here is insurance against it, but i know the moon will never really fall..........but it fell and now i'm truly ass out. What you have to understand is that our market is based on faith, if investors think that your system is broken they will pull all of their money out and there would be a crash of unheard proportions. When Paulson let Lehman crash that faith was lost and many institutions started to yank their money and we saw the largest decline since the great depression. Paulson a Republican then said, we are going to have to bailout the banks and credit markets. This sit back and do nothing is pure madness.

Lehman had bad loans comming back at them, Bear Stearns, JP Morgan. Many foreign countries were bying these heavily mixed toxic securities and AIG was backing them up all. As all of this started to go bad by 2007, our very financial system was at risk. You speak of consevative measures to take, what kind of conservative measure can you take when over 8 trillion dollars is about to go to zip? Paulson Nationalized Fannie and Freddie and then Bailed out Bear Sterns and merged them with JP Morgan.

In 1997 i as a broker could not sell unregulated securities on any major exchange without the proper prospectus and appropriate market. This was changed in 2000. Derivatives came out of the 87' market crash to buttress against a fall, kind of like exotic options, not critical in this discourse. But deregulation was at the core.

Credit Default Swaps are what they are called. It's like writing a contract to insure me against losses, in return i collect a "premium" from you. I can write millions of these contracts and collect billions of dollars, but when the investment goes bad, i have contracted to pay on the losses. Now when many go bad and now i have to pay on many.......... the insurer can lose a great deal of money. Got that.........now take a look at AIG tell me what they do and their relationship to CDS's?
